From the Movies
Flanking the fiery fragment of General Grievous' flagship as it punched through the atmosphere of Coruscant was a squad of emergency firespeeders. Matching speed with the barely-controlled vessel, the firespeeders doused some of the surface fires with pressurized jets of flame-retardant foam shot from wingtip-mounted nozzles. When the flagship came screeching to a bone-shaking halt on a strip of unoccupied industrial district, teams of firefighters emerged from their speeders to inspect the wreckage and put out any remaining flames. From the Expanded Universe
The Battle of Coruscant placed every single citizen of the city planet in jeopardy as fiery fragments of wrecked vessels began to plunge into the atmosphere. With the planetary shields rendered unreliable due to concentrated Separatist efforts, it fell to a screen of daredevil rescue-service pilots to be the last line of defense against catastrophic impact of debris meteorites. Tractor beam equipped tow ships caught some of the largest wrecks, but some pieces still managed to slip past the vigilance of their dedicated pilots. The emergency firespeeders of Fire Team Three scoured the skies over Coruscant's expansive industrial district for any airborne dangers. These vessels featured cowled jet engines in addition to their repulsorlift generators, granting the vehicles their required top speeds.
The speeders feature an ablative cockpit canopy, allowing it brief exposure to intense temperatures. They also have emergency running lights, and an extremely loud annunciator and siren.
Behind the Scenes
The fire suppression speeders were called "fire ships" in the script. In the finished film, they were computer-generated vehicles. Keywords: Databank - Episode III
