From the Movies
Prior to a young Padawan's pairing with a Jedi Master, she was taught in a communal group called a clan. At any given time, there are ten different clans undergoing instruction, under the sageful tutelage of Jedi Master Yoda. Clans consisted of twenty young Jedi hopefuls ranging in age from four to eight, and comprising a number of different species. The mighty Bear Clan contained such bright students as J.K. Burtola, Mari Amithest, and Liam. Anakin Skywalker is a rare example of a Padawan student who skipped the clan-stage of training by joining the order at a late age. From the Expanded Universe
The Jedi children within the clans are far too young for off-world assignments. On occasion, they are transferred to distant training facilities, such as the Jedi training center on Kamparas. When the Jedi available in the Temple were dispatched to Geonosis, Jedi Master Depa Billaba stayed behind to safeguard the children.Behind the Scenes
The two Jedi children that were to have speaking parts were identified simply as "Jedi Child Jack" and "Jedi Child May" in the script, though they were given the more elaborate names of J.K. Burtola and Mari Amithest later on. Mari's lines were cut from the finished film.In the final sequence, a number of children had digitally superimposed computer-generated masks covering their faces, since lengthy prosthetic alien makeup wasn't possible with such young actors.
