Sandage, Wan![]()
![]() From the MoviesWan Sandage was one of the 18 contestants in the fateful Boonta Eve Podrace that saw the liberation of Anakin Skywalker from Tatooine. Like his fellow racers, Sandage had a slight build well suited to the cramped accommodations of his Podracer cockpit. Sandage had a pointed face, beady red eyes, wild green hair and a long neck. From the Expanded UniverseHis wild shock of leafy green plumage and pointed grin sent many of Wan Sandage's female fans into a flutter back on his homeworld of Ord Radama. An unabashed playboy, Sandage had been racing in the professional Podracer leagues since he was two years old.At age six, Sandage began to realize his shot at the big leagues were slipping away from him. After all, Devlikks typically have a lifespan of a standard decade. In a last grasp at stardom, Sandage entered the Boonta Eve Podrace, and crafted a contingency plan to eliminate the race's favored victor, Sebulba. Sandage hired the tube-snouted Glymphid hitman, Aldar Beedo, to dispose of the Dug and even out the odds for him. Beedo failed. Even had the hit succeeded, it would not have done Sandage any good. The greedy cheat lost control of his racer in the third lap and collided with a wayward sandcrawler. Sandage cobbled together his Podracer and next entered into the Vinta Harvest Classic on Malastare. There, his rival Sebulba was again the favored contestant. Not learning a thing from his previous failure, Sandage hired Beedo to take care of the Dug. As before, the Glymphid failed and Sandage didn't win the race. Behind the ScenesSince Wan Sandage would not be seen up close in The Phantom Menace, Industrial Light & Magic designed a fairly low-resolution digital model of the character for distant shots of the Podracer in motion. The Art Department nonetheless crafted a detailed maquette and elaborate paint scheme for the character.Sandage's name dates back to the earliest drafts of Star Wars, which contained a character named Count Sandage.
