From the Movies

This thirsty broad-snouted barfly was present in the Mos Eisley Cantina on the fateful day that Luke Skywalker first met Han Solo.

From the Expanded Universe

To the protocol-bound Sarkans, Melas was always a troublemaker. He was born short for a Sarkan, and his unusual blue eyes and stubby claws invited unwanted attention. It was not his physical deformities that caused his exile, though. The Sarkans have long had a codified custom of despising offworlders and non-Sarkans. Melas' gregarious and social ways were an outrage.

Before his exile, Melas managed to abscond with a considerable fortune in smuggled metals and gems. Melas has used his riches to travel from world to world, seeing different sights and meeting all sorts of interesting beings. He misses home on occasion, but his insatiable curiosity for what's out there easily eclipses his bouts of melancholy.

Behind the Scenes

Melas was a puppet shot and edited into the cantina footage for the Special Edition re-release of A New Hope. The turban-wearing alien replaced a shadowy red-eyed wolf-like creature identified as a Defel. Melas' puppet was actually the same puppet used for Ketwol, except turned around. The back of Ketwol's head became Melas' face, and Ketwol's trunk and tusks were concealed by Melas' turban.
