Mawhonic![]()
![]() From the MoviesThe jock from Hok, Mawhonic had visions of big-time racing success in all three of his eyes. He entered the fateful Boonta Eve Classic that saw the liberation of Anakin Skywalker. His previous qualifying runs earned him a starting position in the front row nearside pole position, putting him neck-and-neck with unscrupulous Sebulba. In the very first lap, Sebulba demonstrated his disrespectful racing style by repeatedly ramming his Podracer into Mawhonic's. Mawhonic's bright green engines scraped the rocky terrain, unsettling the whole vehicle. The Podracer tumbled through the Mushroom Mesa stretch, shattering into thousands of high-velocity fragments. From the Expanded UniverseMawhonic had never been to the Gran homeworld of Kinyen; instead, he grew up on one of that species' colony worlds, Hok. He was a runt by Gran standards, and was often teased by his contemporaries. He longed to find the respect he deserved. He found it in Podracing, where a diminutive stature was an advantage, and not a curse. He invested what credits he had in a GPE-3130 Podracer, which he maintained with spare parts purchased at Watto's shop.Somehow, Mawhonic survived the crash on Tatooine, since he showed up a short time later in the Vinta Harvest Classic. It seems that Mawhonic finally got the respect he was seeking, since he was the favorite among the Grans of Malastare. Behind the ScenesMawhonic was the only alien Podracer to be realized as a masked performer. The rest were computer-generated or puppets. Mawhonic's face was a radio-controlled animatronic mask crafted by Nick Dudman and his crew, using a design dating back to Return of the Jedi's Ree-Yees. A number of similar masks were crafted for Episode I, for Mawhonic's Podracer pit crew and for the Malastare delegation in the Senate scenes. Keywords: Databank - Episode I Filed under: Vault, Character
