Transportation on one of the most populated planets of the galaxy has moved high into the air, weaving between the towering skyscrapers that envelope the world of Coruscant. A great many of these vehicles are Coruscant air taxis, small open-air speeders that carry passengers to their destination.
From the Expanded Universe
Unlike the majority of air traffic on Coruscant, these air taxis can leave the confines of the autonavigated skylanes to take the most direct routes to their destinations. Taxi pilots must pass a series of demanding tests to earn this "free travel" privilege. A powerful repulsorlift housed in the air taxi's ventral fairing boosts it to skyscraping altitudes. The open-air vehicle employs a low-level tractor field in flight to hold passengers securely without seatbelts.
Behind the Scenes
The Coruscant air taxi was realized as a computer-generated model as well as a full-sized mockup. In the DVD release of
The Phantom Menace, there is a newly completed sequence wherein the main characters board an air taxi and soar through the cityscape of Coruscant.
