From the Movies
Jabba's fearsome skiff guards employed a powered pole-arm to force Luke Skywalker off the plank into the Great Pit of Carkoon. Little did the dimwitted enforcers realize it was they who were doomed.
From the Expanded Universe
A vibro-ax is a type of bladed weapon that uses a compact ultrasonic generator to create vibrations along the cutting edge's surface. This drastically increases the weapons lethality, allowing it to lacerate with minimal exertion from the wielder. Similar vibration-based technology can be found in vibroblades, bayonets, and force pikes.
When Lando Calrissian went undercover as a guard in the palace of Jabba the Hutt, waiting in disguise for the right moment to rescue Han Solo, his weapon was a SoroSuub BD-1 Cutter vibro-ax. The porcine Gamorrean Guards employed by the Hutt also used vibro-axes, albeit much cruder versions.
Behind the Scenes
Lando's pole-arm resembles a "powered up" version of a Scottish lochaber, an ancient weapon used for both stabbing and slashing.
