From the Movies

The traditional weapon of Tatooine's Sand People is the double-edge gaderffii, known colloquially as a gaffi stick. This deadly, axe-like weapon is typically fashioned from scavenged metal. As such, there is much weapon variation among the scattered tribes of Tusken Raiders found throughout Tatooine.

Luke Skywalker got an uncomfortably close look at a Tusken's gaffi stick while he was searching for Artoo-Detoo in the Jundland Wastes.

From the Expanded Universe

Some Tusken Raiders have been known to dip their weapons in sandbat venom, making them all the more deadly. Spacer folklore has popularized the term "gaffi stick" to describe any particularly mean-looking, large, non-powered personal weapon.

Gaderffii also serve as practical tools for desert survival, as the Raiders use them as walking sticks along the craggy mesas of Tatooine.

Behind the Scenes

The gaffi stick design is very similar to a war club traditionally used in the South Pacific islands. The hooked end of the Tusken Raider's stick is a very close copy of the Fijian totokia.

Although not visible in the film, the rancor keeper, Malakili, brandished a spade-headed gaderffii in Return of the Jedi.
