From the Movies
Tucked away in Naboo's beautiful and remote Lake Country is a retreat used by Padmé Amidala's family. Surrounded by a shimmering lake, the island lodge became a temporary sanctuary for Padmé and her Jedi protector Anakin Skywalker, who were in hiding to avoid would-be assassins. Caretaker Paddy Accu provided transport to the retreat in his wave-riding gondola speeder, and Teckla and Nandi were the servants who tended the guests.
The retreat had been in Padmé's family for years. When she was in Level Three schooling, she would come here during school retreat. Her friends and family would swim out to a neighboring island, where an elderly jeweler would craft beautiful vases and necklaces out of glass.
From the Expanded Universe
The Naberrie family home in the Lake Country is called Varykino. Padm? is so often on the move in her career that she has yet to take up a permanent residence. On the few occasions when she can relax, Varykino serves as an ideal sanctuary.
Behind the Scenes
The Naboo lake retreat scenes were filmed at some of the villas and gardens around Lake Como, Italy. The interiors, which were sets constructed on a soundstage, were inspired by the basic architecture found in Caserta, where Theed was filmed, but mixed with a softer, personalized style.
