From the Expanded Universe

With the increased piracy and seditious activity that accompanied the unstable times during the transition from Republic to Empire, the Damorian Manufacturing Corporation was tasked to develop a warship capable of tangling with small, fast-moving targets. Early field tests delivered lackluster results, requiring an advanced -- an expensive -- tracking system to follow and target multiple fast moving targets at once.

The end result was the Tartan-class patrol cruiser. The ship is equipped with multiple, fast-targeting laser cannon batteries, and is small and agile enough to keep up with starfighters and prevent them from zeroing in on its vulnerable points. A versatile energy distribution network fed all point-defense weapons, allowing increased firepower to be channeled throughout the ship. This reallocation, though, comes at the expense of deflector shield power.
