Podracer, Wan Sandage's![]()
![]() From the MoviesThe racers that converge at spectacles such as the Boonta Eve Classic bring with them samplings of technology from across the galaxy. Wan Sandage's Podracer had a number of characteristics unique to it, including an almost-insectoid feel to its streamlined designed. Two soaring wings bracket the thin cockpit, which is crested by a large sail-like fin. The small engines have scoop-like curved fairings on them directing air into the turbines. From the Expanded UniverseSandage's winged cockpit was towed behind a pair of scooped Elsinore-Cordova Turbodyne 99-U engines. The racer boasted incredible traction, negating the slippery conditions of treacherous Podrace tracks such as those found on Ando Prime or the Scrapper's Run on Ord Ibanna. Its advanced braking systems gave Sandage an added edge of control. These features failed him at the Boonta Eve Classic, though. Sandage's Podracer was heavily damaged following a third-lap collision with a wayward sandcrawler. The Devlikk was able to piece together his broken vehicle and enter it into the Vinta Harvest Classic a short time later. Behind the ScenesSeveral teams of artists worked together to develop the look of the 18 Podracers glimpsed in The Phantom Menace. While Design Director Doug Chiang and the Art Department developed numerous sketches in the United States, Production Designer Gavin Bocquet and his team of artists in the UK also worked on Podracer designs. Artist Kun Chang developed the look of Wan Sandage's finned cockpit in this sketch. Keywords: Databank - Episode I Filed under: Vault, Vehicle
