From the Movies
On the remote world of Utapau, the sinkhole cities are lined with landing platforms that support all manner of incoming and outgoing vessels, including native craft such as the sleek Utapau P-38 starfighter. These vessels were employed with the natives during a battle to liberate their world from Separatist occupational forces in the Clone Wars.
From the Expanded Universe
Built by Buuper Torsckil Abbey Devices, the Porax-38 fighter has acute sensors, strong shields, a limited hyperdrive and twin laser cannons.
Behind the Scenes
George Lucas' very fluid methods of filmmaking allow for new elements and ideas to easily drop into an evolving story. This freedom occasionally runs counter to the more rigid deadlines maintained by publishers as they try to produce tie-in books in time for the film's release. This sometimes leads to discrepancies between the finished film and the published books.
The P-38 starfighter was afforded a lavish two-page spread in the Revenge of the Sith Incredible Cross-Sections book by DK Books. A vessel of the native Utapaun resistance force, the ultra-sleek one-man snubfighter was given a full write-up and exploded view illustration.
The P-38 was a late addition to the film, its sleek lines catching the eyes of the Cross-Sections art team to warrant inclusion. But it was also a late subtraction from the film; though developed as a digital model, it was never completed to the level originally planned. You may be able to spot it briefly flying over Utapau, but it has been relegated to a role of tiny background craft.
