EV-9D9 (Eve-Ninedenine)![]()
![]() From the MoviesEV-9D9 (or Eve-Ninedenine) was the sadistic taskmaster in charge of Cyborg Operations at Jabba's palace. Her demented programming suited her well in this function. During her position at Jabba's, she oversaw the placement of C-3PO as Jabba's translator, and R2-D2 aboard Jabba's sail barge. The bronze-colored droid had a rod-thin build and a grating mechanical voice. From the Expanded UniverseThe programming defect that transformed a benign overseer droid into a brutal torturer was not unique to Eve; rather it was a flaw inherent in first-production EV units from MerenData. Many were recalled, but EV-9D9 was one of the many that slipped through the cracks. Compounding that flaw was a slip-up while handling that caused Eve to become even more damaged. Before her position with Jabba the Hutt, Eve-Ninedenine supervised the now-defunct GoCorp repulsor plant. The droid laborers at GoCorp were unbelievably overworked. The attrition rate was high, but production was well beyond what droids are normally able to accomplish. Eve gravitated to Cloud City on Bespin. A rash of destroyed droids alerted security to her presence. Eve succeeded in destroying a quarter of Cloud City's droid population. She sabotaged Cloud City's flotation systems before hijacking the Ioprene Princess and escaping from the Wing Guard. EV-9D9 found herself on Tatooine. Her track record of ruthless efficiency earned her high marks in Jabba's sickly eyes. She became head of all droids in the palace, a position she relished. EV-9D9 was a sadomasochist. She relished in the electronic jumble of signals that was the droid equivalent of pain. She machined specialized sensors called pain buttons and affixed them to droids so that they could transmit their anguish. She studied the signals, savored them, and grew to need them. To that end, Eve had a specialized third optic sensor that could specially analyze the algorithms of pain. She prized this extrasensory ability. With her constant abuse against the droids of the palace, EV-9D9 developed a sort of paranoia about recriminations against her. Eve often hid in a subterranean "laboratory" of sorts, where she would experiment on fellow droids, mangling and twisting them in unspeakable ways. She detected the Rebel plot to kill Jabba before many of the palace henchbeings did. But she failed to stop her own demise. A droid worker from Cloud City, 12-4C-41, finally tracked her down. Wuntoo blasted EV-9D9. Rather than let the droid relish her own pain, Wuntoo tore out her third optic and disabled her pain button. Eve lay dying, unable to study the sensations of her final moments. The twisted droids she had experimented on crawled toward her, and dismantled her. Behind the ScenesEV-9D9 appeared as early as the rough draft of the Revenge of the Jedi script, where she was known as U-8D8. In the revised second draft, she was renamed EV-8D8. In the third draft, she received her final name and her skull-faced underling instead inherited the 8D8 moniker. On set, director Richard Marquand provided his voice to the droid puppet, which was later redubbed during post-production.Keywords: Databank - Episode VI Filed under: Vault, Droid
