Le Morte Darth: Ghostly Vader Fan Photo

October 8, 2009

For the last several years, photographer and fan Stephen Hayford has been composing whimsical Star Wars-themed diorama images peopled with Hasbro action figures and homespun props, earning something of a following from readers of rebelscum.com and others who happen upon his pictures. A photojournalist for 20 years, one of his holiday images even landed in The Star Wars Vault -- a Thanksgiving diorama posing the Empire Strikes Back heroes in the Cloud City dining room, with Vader carving the turkey (with lightsaber, of course).

Hayford now focuses on commercial photography, including toys. "Lately, my diorama work has centered around my 'Hello From Florida' series of postcards and pieces for art exhibits," says Hayford, who maintains a website at stephenhayford.com. "I created the cemetery scene to promote a local Halloween event and after the shoot I decided the scene screamed for Darth Vader's silhouette. The trees are made from paper towel tubes, newspaper, masking tape and interior wall spackling. Atmosphere was created with a fog machine."

Scroll down to see a couple images previously posted at rebelscum.com, and also be sure to check out Hayford's website at stephenhayford.com (other toy photos can be found in the Plastics gallery of the commercial photography section of the site).
