How do you cap off a show that starts off with Kate Beckinsdale and Anthony Hopkins and includes Tim Burton flying on a cluster of hot air balloons, Smashing Pumpkins premiering a new song and The Dark Knight winning a slew of trophies?
Simple, you get Samuel L. Jackson onstage with 50 stormtroopers and give an award to the man responsible for entertaining millions for over 30 years: George Lucas.
The latest trophy to Lucas's already burgeoning collection was the very fitting Comic-Con Icon Award. The event was taped this past Saturday in Hollywood at the Greek Theater and unlike some other award shows, this one doesn't ignore comic book, fantasy, sci-fi and horror films -- it instead embraces them and their creators.
With an audience that looks nothing like people you might see over at the Kodak Theater (let's just say both Gumby and goth was the fashion on the red carpet) the show was a thrill from the minute the first guest strolled in to the very end when Lucas took the stage to accept his award.
Previous recipients of the Icon Award include Neil Gaiman and Frank Miller.
Lucas remarked that he is the first non-comic book guy to win. However, we all know that while he doesn't draw or create comics, Star Wars is not only inspired by past comics but has spawned titles too numerous to count.
Members of the audience did not know Lucas would be honored and when he appeared onstage amidst a laser show, a battalion of stormtroopers and a million waving green glowsticks, the crowd jumped to their feet.
Samuel L. Jackson gave a rousing speech saying that Lucas was responsible for bringing us "heroes, villains and crushes" and introduced Lucas as... well.. if you've seen a Samuel L. Jackson film, you know his favorite word.
Lucas was visibly touched at receiving such an uproarious welcome and thanked Comic-Con for giving a place for fans of many genres to come together.
He went on to cite the many comics and films from the past that inspired him to create Star Wars including Flash Gordon and Commander Cody.
Lucas also took time to point out that Star Wars has been appearing at Comic-Con for over 30 years which made this tribute even more fitting.
He held the statue high above his head and jokingly pronounced "The Galaxy is mine!"
But wait, that's not all...
Samuel L. Jackson Joins the 501st
Is it possible to be both a Jedi and a stormtrooper?
Only if your name is Samuel L. Jackson.
In fact, you can do whatever you want when you are as cool he is.
This is, after all, the man who asked for a purple lightsaber and got it from the Maker himself no less.
This past weekend, as Master Windu was in Los Angeles at the Spike Scream Awards, he was joined by several members of the 501st Legion from the Southern California, Neon, Alpine, Dune Sea, and Central California Garrisons. When these fans learned that Jackson was going to attend, they saw it as the perfect opportunity to finally make Jackson an official member.
In fact they already had the plaque.
You see, for years the 501st has been trying to track down the elusive Jedi but when you make as many films as Jackson, you don't get many days off.
When asked if he would accept the honor, Jackson did not hesitate to say yes.
Immediately following Lucas's acceptance speech for the Comic-Con Icon Award, Jackson was whisked into the 501st holding area backstage. The troopers were still coming offstage from their appearance with Lucas and were more than a little happy to see Jackson waiting for them.
Within seconds Jackson had an ignited lightsaber in one hand and was signing helmets with the other.
After a quick ceremony and some photos, Jackson walked off with yet another reason he is the baddest good guy in Hollywood.
