After Ezra’s brush with the dark side, Kanan decides it’s time for Ezra to complete one of the Jedi trials. Will Ezra find the “Path of the Jedi” — in the eighth episode of Season One — or will he step further into darkness?
Here are my 10 favorite moments from the episode!
1. Like Master like Padawan.
Ezra’s distractibility, his quick mind, and stubborn streak all make him who he is — but also make him tougher to train than a youngling raised within the Jedi Order. Of course, Caleb Dume was trained in the Temple and he was a handful, as well.
2. Trust but verify.
While Kanan wants Ezra to find the Temple using the Force, he still does his own research. He believes Ezra can lead the way and that the Force will guide him, but any Master knows it’s a good idea to know the facts before you teach another.
3. “Together it shall be.”
Every time Kanan and Ezra use the Force together, it makes me smile. Each has his own strengths and understanding of the Force, but when they team up there’s a trust that resonates. Watching them focus and open the Temple is a reminder of what they can accomplish together.
4. Kanan’s words of wisdom.
One thing’s for sure, Kanan has the Jedi way of speaking down pat. Nothing and everything? What does that mean?
5. Is Ezra ready to become a Jedi?
We know it’s his first test, but Ezra doesn’t. He sees Kanan bested and then killed by the Inquisitor, and he’s unable to stop it. He tries, but can’t even manage to ignite his lightsaber as the Inquisitor tells him that he’s not ready to become a Jedi and never will be. Can he face his fears?
6. No one on the Ghost really cares about him.
I know it’s sad to see that some part of Ezra fears that everyone on the Ghost is just being nice to him because they want to use him or pity him, but Hera being truly mean, cold, and calculating is one of my favorite moments because it’s so not who she is.
7. Facing the Inquisitor.
It takes a bit, but Ezra figures out what these tests are about and faces down the Inquisitor by following his training. As the illusion fades and Yoda speaks, we know Ezra has passed the first series of tests.
8. Like Padawan like Master.
Just as Ezra faces his trials, so too does Kanan, because he still has doubts about himself as a Master. Yoda’s ability to see Kanan now is because Kanan already is Ezra’s Master, and he just has to believe it. He resolves to keep Ezra on the path and vows not to let Ezra lose his way like he did.
9. “A Jedi you might be.”
When Yoda asks Ezra why he wants to be a Jedi, Ezra’s first response is filled with anger and the need for revenge, but when he calms himself, he says that helping people makes him feel alive. With that, Yoda gifts the boy a kyber crystal. Kanan’s surprise is a hint of how unusual that is.
10. Ezra’s new lightsaber.
What lies ahead remains to be seen, but Ezra’s committed to the path forward and he’s built his own lightsaber. With every member of the crew having contributed in some way, the lightsaber is unique and it’s perfectly Ezra.
Those were my moments for this week’s episode. Tell me what your favorite moments were in the comments and may the Force be with you!
