Who Will Win This Is Madness’ Play-In Matchups?

This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament has returned, and all eyes will be on Yoda, who be looking to repeat as champion. Last year, the Grand Master of the Jedi Order defeated Darth Vader in the finale by a 3:2 margin (60%) of votes. The loss for Vader didn’t sit well with a lot of Star Wars fans, and was deemed an upset by many after watching him cruise through the Dark Side conference.

For this year’s tournament, both Yoda and Vader will be squaring off against old foes and some new faces as well. The action started yesterday with Attack of the Play-Ins, in which four Star Wars characters will have to win a spot in the tournament.

Last year, we at VegasInsider.com handicapped the bracket and are back to offer some insight on the opening weekend.

Let the Madness begin!

Light Side – Rebels

Wedge Antilles - This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament

Wedge Antilles – In basketball jargon, Wedge would be considered a double-double machine. He’s a veteran of two Death Star battles where he scored a goal and an assist, not to mention multiple Tie fighter kills and an AT-AT takedown. Experience should earn this character a spot in next week’s field.

Light Side – Jedi

Qui-Gon Jinn - This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament

Qui-Gon Jinn – Pedigree is a great handicapping factor and we believe users will go that route in this quartet with Qui-Gon Jinn, who is the Socrates of the Jedi Order. It won’t be easy getting past Ahsoka Tano, who advanced to the second round in last year’s Madness, but we believe the teacher of Obi-Wan, who in turn was the teacher of Luke, will survive.

Dark Side – Empire and Separatists

Admiral Piett - This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament

Admiral Piett – Four newbies will be squaring off in this play-in matchup and we’re going to stick with staying power. Piett is a clear beneficiary of Darth Vader’s “promote from within” corporate policy and that should help him advance this weekend.

Dark Side – Bounty Hunters

Dengar - This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament

Dengar – Some fans might question why Dengar was invited back to Madness, considering Boba Fett destroyed him by the widest margin (94% to 6%) in last year’s tournament. Despite the blowout, we believe any man with that questionable a wardrobe who can still get invited to Darth Vader’s bounty hunter party has to be something special. Dengar will earn his revenge battle against Boba Fett next week.
