What do you do when you have more thoughts about Star Wars Rebels than you know what to do with? Make a list of your favorite moments — in no particular order, because that might fry your circuits. Welcome to Ranking Rebels.
Han and Luke may have gone undercover as stormtroopers in Star Wars: A New Hope, but they were only able to keep up the disguise for a little while. In “Breaking Ranks,” Ezra stays undercover much longer and even finds an ally at the Imperial Academy on Lothal.
Here are my 10 favorite moments from the episode!
Ezra may feel more a part of the Ghost crew “family,” but there’s something about seeing him get to enjoy having a few friends to banter and hang with. It’s also an interesting look at how his life may have turned out under different circumstances.
2. Chopper, is that you?
Undercover Chopper is always fun. Between the new paint job and his ability to go places within the Academy, I can just imagine what sort of things he gets up to.
3. An unexpected ally.
Zare Leonis may start off as just another Academy kid, but this episode was our introduction to a character with a much larger story that unfolded in a four book series by Jason Fry. Not only does he become Ezra’s ally, but his story shows another side of the larger rebellion.
4. All your data are belong to Ezra.
He may be cocky, but Ezra’s Force abilities are growing by leaps and bounds. When he really sets his mind to it, he can do some pretty awesome things. Especially when he’s under pressure. That data card theft would have made Yoda proud.
He’s baaaaaa-accck. Jason Isaacs’ portrayal of the Inquisitor is so good that it sends a shiver up your spine, especially when he’s calmly going about his daily duties like, say, testing cadets for possible Force sensitivity. Just what does he do with them?
6. Ezra’s video message.
Kanan may be chomping at the bit to get Ezra out of there, but Ezra’s decision to stay at the Academy another day in order to save Jai is a sign of his growth — and something Kanan would do as Ezra so cheerfully explains in his video.
7. The kyber crystal.
The entire mission to take out the kyber crystal is great. Lots of fancy flying, Hera’s amazing “you don’t hit ME face” and that mid-air docking maneuver between the Ghost and Phantom as that kyber crystal blows are all fantastic.
Makes you wonder just where that crystal was going…
8. Star Wars Rebels: The Walker Revolt.
Things may not have gone according to plan, but Zare, Jai, and Ezra make it work and the result is beautiful chaos. Between walkers shooting walkers and Aresko and Grint’s running commentary about just who’s trying to “help,” those three boys manage a lot of destruction.
9. Zeb, Sabine, and Chopper to the rescue!
Okay, I admit, the boys do get a little help and they can’t take credit for all of the explosions and felled troopers. The cadets can only do so much and these three coming to the rescue is a great finish and getaway.
10. Zare’s sacrifice.
If you look in the dictionary under “bravery,” there should be a picture of Zare Leonis. It takes a lot of guts to go back to the Academy knowing what you’ll face, but Zare does it both to save his sister and help our rebels. Any kid who can stand up to the Inquisitor is a real hero.
Those were my moments for this week’s episode. Tell me what your favorite moments were in the comments and may the Force be with you!
