For this year’s fall season, Vans and Lucasfilm have collaborated on a special project that merges Vans heritage with iconic Star Wars graphics. Vans designers Calvin Garcia and Taka Hayashi share their thoughts on the endeavor and explain how they approached these designs.
“Anyone I have ever met that has watched all of the Star Wars movies has become an instant fan like myself. And I was thrilled to find out that we were going to collaborate with Star Wars! Working closely with one of my heroes, legendary Vans skateboarder, Steve Caballero, we created a unique custom twist on the iconic Half-Cab label which depicts two of my favorite Star Wars characters, Yoda and Darth Vader, skateboarding in outer space! The Yoda Half-Cab LX is covered in natural white hairy suede with touches of luxurious grainy leather underlays, and it is reminiscent of Yoda’s outfit, but with a more wearable color way. The Darth Vader Half-Cab LX is comprised of black premium grain leather with embossed leather underlays to mimic details of Darth Vader’s suit. Both shoes are laced with high-end waxed laces, and are topped off by metal lightsaber aglets. We wanted to create the essence of a battle between good versus evil, and I feel that we have successfully accomplished that with these great looking Star Wars Half-Cabs. I can’t wait to see Star Wars fans and skateboard enthusiasts alike battling it out in these shoes, wearing Chewbacca masks and wildly swinging lightsabers around. Lastly, I wonder how many of these fans would turn to the dark side with the Darth Vader Half-Cabs, or become one with the Force with the Yoda Half-Cabs!”

“Being a huge fan of Star Wars and Vans growing up, I was really excited to be a part of this special collaboration. The Empire Strikes Back was definitely one of my favorites out of all the Episodes. I wanted to incorporate some of the memorable characters and scenes from the movie. My idea was to inject Star Wars characters into some of the iconic Vans prints by reworking them into a seamless look between the two worlds. From a distance it looks like the original Vans print but the closer you get, the more you start seeing Star Wars emerge. The OG Sk8-Hi LX and the OG Slip On LX feature a bold and colorful graphic silhouette of AT-AT walking through the Vans heritage Tropical/Island Beach print on a heavy 8 oz. canvas, with premium off-white suede leather. The OG Era LX and the OG Sk8-Hi feature Darth Vader and the Stormtrooper’s masks, with bandana replacing the pirate skulls on the Vans Pirate Skull print. The repeat Vans Logo was replaced with the Star Wars logo on the Era quarter panel. The two iconic prints tie in really well with the Caribbean theme of pirates — as the dark side — taking over the island. It’s a Star Wars scene through a Vans lens!”
