runDisney Star Wars: The Empire Strides Back

An intrepid writer continues his training for the runDisney Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend! But he is not a Jedi, yet...

Next week, the first ever Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend kicks off at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. In the home stretch now, I’ve got the latest race details, my personal progress report, and my own Star Wars running playlist to get you ready for the big race.

If you are one of the lucky fans already registered for the sold out event, be sure to head over to for all of the latest info. They’ve posted the Digital Event Guide, course maps, and all of the details you need for the entire weekend of events. While you are there, check out the particulars for picking up your participant packet, coral assignments, and waivers.

Over the past month since my first post, I’ve been training regularly, eating strange health foods, shopping at running stores, and I’ve learned about shin splints: all alien concepts to this out-of-shape writer. I shaved about two minutes off my pace and can comfortably run three miles on a typical training run. I’m still a running novice (youngling, you might say), but I’m running better, faster, and longer than at any point in my life.

One thing that keeps me motivated while running is great music. I’ve collected my own Star Wars playlist with a wide variety of my favorite tracks from all six films as well as Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Call me evil, but I love to begin a run with the well-paced Imperial March and end with the triumphant Throne Room music. In between, I’ve included the upbeat cantina songs and a few other surprises. At 87 minutes long, this playlist will pace out a 10k runner to 14-minute miles:

“The Imperial March” (3:04 The Empire Strikes Back)
“Cantina Band” (2:47 – A New Hope)
“Duel of the Fates” (4:14 – The Phantom Menace)
“Seedy City Swing” (:35 – The Clone Wars Movie Soundtrack)
“The Republic Pilots Take Off Into Space” (1:26 – The Phantom Menace The Ultimate Edition Soundtrack)
“Bounty Hunter Pursuit” (3:25 – Attack of the Clones)
“The Rebel Fleet/End Title” (6:28 – The Empire Strikes Back)
“Jedi Rocks” (2:50 – Return of the Jedi)
“Battle of the Heroes” (3:49 – Revenge of the Sith)
“Landspeeder Search/Attack of the Sand People” (3:21 – A New Hope)
“Victory Celebration/End Title” (8:33 – Return of the Jedi)
“TIE Fighter Attack” (3:51 – A New Hope)
“The Training of a Jedi Knight” (5:15 The Empire Strikes Back)
“Star Wars and Revenge of the Sith” (7:38 – Revenge of the Sith)
“Parade of the Ewoks” (3:28 Return of the Jedi)
“The Asteroid Field” (4:16 The Empire Strikes Back)
“Cantina Band #2” (3:55 – A New Hope)
“Lando’s Palace” (3:53 The Empire Strikes Back)
“Lapti Nek” (2:53 – Return of the Jedi)

My next runDisney update will come from Anaheim, where I’ll be reporting in from the Wookiee Welcome Party, Expo, and, of course, the races. Be sure to say hello if you see me at any of the events. I’ll be looking for the most creative and fun running costumes to feature right here on
