With two new teachers and far more responsibility than he bargained for, Ezra finds himself on an adventure with Hondo Ohnaka as they become the “Brothers of the Broken Horn.” Here are my 10 favorite moments from the episode!
1. “What if I don’t want to be either?”
Ezra’s having a hard time getting used to serving two masters, one a soldier, one a Jedi. It’s a lot for him. Maybe he doesn’t want to do this anymore. Rex and Kanan, meanwhile, have no idea what’s up with the kid because, let’s be honest, they’re both focused on what they want and expect from him.
2. “Now you have scrubbing practice.”
Poor Ezra. After all that, he’s getting left behind. No wonder he answers Vizago’s distress call. You know Ezra, he’s always ready to help a friend — especially if it gets him out of work.
3. Well, hellooooo Hondo.
Really, do I need to say anything else? Hondo’s reveal is pure Hondo and I’ve missed him so much.
4. “You lied to me? I knew I liked you!”
It’s amazing to see how well Ezra actually manages to match Hondo, deal for deal, even as conditions change. However, Azmorigan’s not only going to collect a bounty on Hondo’s head — he’s going to keep his money and the generators. The next thing you know, Chopper’s blasting here and tossing blasters there while Ezra shows off both his fighting and thinking skills.
5. Chopper to the rescue, guns ablazing!
You go from cheering Chopper to laughing at Hondo’s “I’m rich! I’m dead!” to cheering again as Ezra Force grabs the pirate to save him. Sure, Azmorigan gets away, but now Ezra and Hondo have the money and the generators. This also means that Hondo knows Ezra’s a Jedi. Luckily, Hondo assures Ezra, “One of my best friends was a Jedi. I’m pretty sure we were friends.”
6. Be a pirate Jedi!
When Hondo thanks Ezra for his help, you can tell he’s sincere in his own Hondo way. When Ezra negotiates for the generators, part of him knows Hondo’s playing with him, but he also senses that Hondo might be serious. Plus, it might be nice not to have any responsibility. Pirate Jedi does sound pretty fun…
7. Wait a minute — Vizago!
I love that Vizago’s all cranky and Ezra simply points out that he’s not the one who got locked in his own brig. Good point, Ezra! When Vizago calls in his favor and Ezra releases him, Ezra thinks he gets to keep the generators. Fair’s fair. Except Vizago’s not willing to give up his generators and half the profit. Looks like Hondo and Ezra are back on the same side again!
8. Or not…
Hondo skips out, taking the Phantom, and there’s Ezra with no generators in an escape pod. But thanks to Chopper, the generators and the Phantom end up at the Ghost. The grumpy astromech saved the day in more ways than one.
9. Hondo, ever the fast talker.
You can tell that Kanan and Hera don’t know whether to be angry or amused as Hondo tells the story of how he and the Phantom arrived on the Ghost with money, generators, and no Ezra. In the end, Hondo ends up honoring the deal he and Ezra made; all of the generators for Ezra, and Hondo keeps the credits.
10. “You really are a Jedi.”
Hondo and Ezra share a goodbye that’s fond and a little regretful. Part of Ezra would have loved to be a Pirate Jedi, but this adventure has taught him something. He tells Kanan that he used to be like Hondo and, while he may be having a harder time managing everything, he knows his life now has meaning and purpose. Kanan slips a comforting arm around Ezra’s shoulder as Master and Padawan board the Ghost.
