Entrepreneur. Starship captain. Legendary Rebellion general. Lando Calrissian’s got an impressive résumé, but in his heart of hearts he’s a man who just wants to have a good time. Running a mining colony and going to war was the last thing he ever hoped to do. In The Empire Strikes Back, actor Billy Dee Williams cemented the character in our imaginations; with Solo: A Star Wars Story, Donald Glover has brought Lando back to the forefront of Star Wars fandom.
In this new series, I’m taking another look at my favorite lines in the saga with a focus on individual characters. And since the spectacular Solo is in theaters as we speak, today we’re counting down some of the best quotes from a smooth-talkin’ scoundrel with an affinity for fine capes.
1. “How you doin’, ya old pirate? So good to see ya!”
Lando’s 1980 introduction is a brilliant bit of acting from Billy Dee. What starts as a tense face-off between two capable scoundrels quickly turns to a lot of laughter and hugging. Despite an awkward bit of business involving Darth Vader, Lando and Han have one of the best friendships in the galaxy far, far away.
2. “Hello — what have we here?”
Leia may not trust Lando in the beginning, but the old smoothie knows how to make even the most beloved and well-traveled princess feel especially welcome in Cloud City. This is one of the most oft-quoted lines in all of Star Wars.
3. “You know, that ship’s saved my life quite a few times. She’s the fastest hunk o’ junk in the galaxy!”
Like Han, Lando has an intense love of the Falcon and a sense of pride toward its legendary exploits. And now, thanks to Solo, we understand a great deal more about his unique relationship with the old YT-model freighter.
4. “Yeah, I’m responsible these days. It’s the price you pay for being successful.”
Going legitimate and getting out from under his debts was supposed to be Lando’s path to freedom; running a tibanna-gas mine wasn’t exactly what he had in mind. Fortunately, he soon fits right in among the heroes of the Rebellion.
5. “You look absolutely beautiful. You truly belong here with us among the clouds.”
If Leia gives the best insults in the galaxy (“…you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!”), then Lando’s the galaxy’s greatest complimenter.
6. “This deal is getting worse all the time.”
Another quotable line whose impact comes mostly from Williams’s performance. As the audience, we’re seeing a good and decent man being forced to cooperate with Lord Vader — a situation most of us would consider the stuff of nightmares. But Lando keeps his cool and lives to fight another day.
7. “Someone must’ve told them about my little maneuver at the Battle of Taanab.”
After heroically fighting off a fleet of pirates and saving Han Solo’s life, Calrissian gets the big break he’s always needed, if not necessarily the one he’d planned for: the rank of general in the Rebel Alliance.
8. “I’ll take good care of her. She won’t get a scratch.”
Another great moment with renewed meaning and context, courtesy of Solo: A Star Wars Story. It’s also a funny bit of setup for the assault on the Death Star — where the Falcon does, in fact, get a scratch. (“That was too close,” he says. Actually, consider that quote #8A.)
9. “Everything you’ve heard about me is true.”
Glover’s young Lando is first introduced in the scoundrel’s favored habitat: at the head of a card table playing sabacc. Whatever wild rumors might have sprung up about him, he’s cool with it.
10. “You might want to buckle up, baby.”
When we first see the Falcon jump to lightspeed in Solo, Lando and L3-37 are at the helm; Han’s merely a passenger, still unaware of how truly special the little Corellian ship is. But you might call it love at first flight.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now.
