Star Wars: Episode III
Revenge of the Sith through full-frame imagery pulled directly from the film and featured on the new line of Topps Widevision Cards, due to be released this September.
"Widevision is a format that has become synonymous with Star Wars cards," says Topps editor Matthew Saunders. "It presents a letterbox or widescreen image that more closely matches what you see on screen without the edges being cropped off to fit a traditional card size. We began this format with Star Wars, because the beauty and scope of the films deserve a fuller, more complete treatment. Certainly Revenge of the Sith, as the final chapter of Anakin's fall and re-birth as Vader, deserved this treatment as well. The movie was absolutely breathtaking and we think fans will not only want to complete their Widevision collections, but will enjoy seeing this film presented in a format that more closely resembles their theater experience."
The set consists of 80 foil-stamped cards (2 1/2" x 4 11/16") showcasing new movie images on fronts and backs. The backs feature designs that rotate from a blue Anakin/
Obi-Wan, red
Darth Vader/
Darth Sidious, and green
Yoda/
Chewbacca backgrounds. The Widevision cards will be available in 6-card packs. Both hobby and retail outlets will carry 24-pack boxes.
The boxes will also carry Chrome Art Cards featuring concept art and paintings from the film that may be making its first public appearance in the card series. There will be 10 Chrome Art insert cards for the Hobby version, and another 10 Chrome Art cards for the Retail version (i.e., 20 in total, but 10 exclusive to each version).
"There is just so much beautiful artwork created during the preparation and development of these films, and Revenge of the Sith was no exception," Saunders says. "We picked 20 of the best shots and are giving them the Chrome treatment, which will make for some really gorgeous cards between the art itself and the chrome etching and gloss effects.
Plus, there are 20 more shots on the backs. Through this stunning imagery, the cards will not only retell the story of the film in abbreviated form, but also visually tell the story of how the movie developed from concept to final product."
The Hobby packs will include the ever-popular Autograph insert cards. The autograph list is subject to change as the publication date approaches, but once it is finalized, it will be posted here at starwars.com.
And the Retail packs will feature Flix-Pix insert cards, 10 in all, which are lenticular motion cards. They feature three images of a Jedi or Sith character with a lightsaber, that flip/move between the three images.
"The cards feature 10 different characters (Anakin, Obi-Wan, Mace, Yoda, Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, Count Dooku, General Grievous, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Aayla Secura), posed holding a lightsaber," Saunders explains. "Each card will flip or morph between three images of that character in different action poses. In addition to the character image itself changing, the lava graphic at the bottom will shift and the background behind the character will also shift. These are exciting, dynamic cards using the same technology we used for the popular Anakin/Vader morphing cards in the last set."
Topps will release a promo card for the set, available at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International, and another as a mass-market retail card.
