The Bonus DVD Menus -- Return of the Jedi

On September 12, fans will be able to return to the theatrical experience of Return of the Jedi as they remember it from 1983 when the original unaltered version of Episode VI is released on DVD for the very first and only time.

For the Return of the Jedi bonus DVD, the Main Menu explodes open with the destruction of the Death Star, seamlessly incorporating Tom Jung's 1985 re-release poster artwork to mimic the shot seen in the movie. Pulling away from the Death Star with the Falcon and Rebel fighters, the menu morphs into Drew Struzan's crimson Revenge of the Jedi teaser artwork, focusing on the film's central conflict between Luke and Vader. Fans of Struzan's classic Revenge poster should be happy to see the original fiery red-orange title font preserved for the title's "Return" incarnation.

New Wave Studio Senior Producer Paul Schneider explains how the static 2D poster artwork was vitalized with added dimension and motion: "When we were paring down the poster choices for each menu, we would verbally pitch our motion ideas to Lucasfilm. Certain objects on each of the three Main Menus were then lifted directly from these posters and recreated in Maya, which is a 3D animation program. They had to be modeled, texture-mapped and lit to look like they were 'living' in the actual posters. The trick was to bring everything together dynamically (and quickly) into one of the frozen iconic poster images, as everyone remembers it."

In addition to motion and dimension, the Main Menu images are cinematically enhanced by the addition of sound effects and music -- in the case of Return of the Jedi, we hear the explosion of the Death Star and the clash of lightsabers, as well as a few bars from John Williams' signature Jedi score.

Other menus incorporate some familiar Jedi poster artwork -- Chapters utilizes Tim Reamer's "raised lightsaber" one-sheet artwork, while Options showcases the rarely-seen British quad design by Josh Kirby. The computer launch page displays Kazu Sano's famous Style "B" montage design.

According to Schneider, there was really only one requirement each of the menus had to satisfy. "I'm hoping our menus---simple and straightforward as they are---will give fans an exciting, visceral punch that will bring them back to a time when these movies were first released and became a part of our lives."

Like the original posters that announced the arrival of the first Star Wars trilogy, the new bonus DVD menus successfully set the stage for a nostalgic journey to our favorite galaxy far, far away.

September 12 also marks the release of LucasArts' LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, the video game that combines the magic of Star Wars with the fun of LEGO. Click here for more information.
