Chewie Tour Continues: Australia & Germany
September 20, 2004

[ Click Here To View Images ] In celebration of the release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD, Chewbacca has hit the road to meet fans around the world with the "Where's the Wookiee?" tour.

Fans spotted the Walking Carpet last in Sydney, Australia, visiting the landmark Sydney Harbour Bridge, strolling around the Sydney Opera House, stopping for a lovely cold beverage at the pub in the Tilbury Hotel, walking across the Anzac Bridge, and meeting Australian celebrity DJs Sophie Monk and Ian "Dicko" Dickson (host of "Australian Idol").

Unfortunately Chewie didn't get to pet a kangaroo (apparently, the animals at the Taronga Zoo were not too enamored of a giant hairy alien beast).

[ Chewie Tour Continues: Australia & Germany ] Of course, a Wookiee in the middle of Sydney doesn't go unnoticed, and Chewie found himself in the middle of a media whirlwind. A national newscast ran a story about Chewie visiting children and Randwick Children's Hospital, and Radio WSFM and MIX 106.5 reported that Chewie was causing a few minor traffic jams on the Glebe Island Bridge. On "Sunrise Breakfast" on Seven Network (one of Australia's most popular morning shows) Chewie helped the local weatherman with his forecast, and the phones at Radio Nova 96.9 reportedly went crazy with viewers calling in Chewie sightings.

After Australia, Chewbacca headed to Europe starting with Berlin, Germany. As soon as he settled into the Kempinski Bristol hotel he headed off to sight-see. Chewie bonded with a street band playing a set on the Breitscheid Platz, and then headed to the Brandenburg Gate, perhaps the most famous symbol of German history.

Chewie then hopped on a favorite mode of transportation in the park along Ebertstrasse -- the Velo Taxi -- and moved on to see one of Berlin's most interesting relics from the recent past, the remains of the Berlin Wall. Having learned a thing or two about oppressive political regimes during his days with the Alliance, Chewie was impressed with the Wall.

By this point, Chewie's visit to Berlin couldn't be kept a secret, and Radio RTL 104.6, one of the most popular radio stations in the capital city, began broadcasting a series of "Chewbacca sighting" alerts which in turn reminded fans of the Star Wars Trilogy DVD release on September 20 in Germany.

Chewie decided to stop at Potsdamer Platz to place a call, then made his way to the famous Berlin Zoo. Though the day was cloudy and cool, all that fur and walking around left Chewie hungry for some ice cream and then a quick break in the bushes, away from the throngs of fans that began to follow him around. Even hopping on a bicycle couldn't keep his fans away.

Chewie began his world tour in Tokyo, Japan, sipping tea, meditating at the Johzohji temple and saying hello to his fans. To read more about his visit to Tokyo (including a photo slideshow), click here.

Chewie will continue his travels across the globe up until the release of the Star Wars Trilogy DVD box set on September 21. So keep your eyes peeled, and if you see the Walking Carpet in person, say hello. The first few fans who offer a friendly handshake may be rewarded with a Star Wars Trilogy DVD box set!

He's heard there's a swingin' town in a country not too far away, and ever since Tokyo he's been craving a decent spot of tea.
