When you set your story against a backdrop as big as a galaxy, then your evil masterminds need to have a weapon of comparable scale. Terrestrial villains can get away with plots to destabilize currencies or melt polar ice caps, but those hardly register as nuisances on a pan-galactic scale. As a result, the past 30 years of Star Wars storytelling has become a graveyard littered with the carcasses of unthinkable superweapons. Well, maybe not too unthinkable, since the bad guys keep coming up with them.
Here's a primer on some of the doomsday devices that have plagued our heroes since '77.
