Drawing the Lurmen

Ever wanted to draw Star Wars characters and vehicles just like the professional comic book artists? In this step-by-step series, Star Wars artists and illustrators show you how to draw some of the most beloved characters in the saga.

Star Wars illustrator Cynthia Cummens-Narcisi explains with these easy-to-follow steps on how to draw one of the Lurmen from The Clone Wars animated TV series. The Lurmen are a species of lemur-like humanoids who strongly believe in peace.

Step One:
Start by drawing a loose sketch of the figure in any pose you want. Or you can copy mine!

Step Two:
Draw his facial features and his robe. Notice how one hand is behind his back? That's a characteristic of this Lurmen that I felt was important to include in the sketch. Why? It's part of his personality. When you draw your characters, no matter what or who they are, you want to give them particular traits and nuances to make their personality come alive on the page.

Step Three:
Notice how loose my lines are as I sketch his arms and legs. I also added a bit of detail on his clothes. Are your lines loose like mine? If not, use less pressure with your hand. Don't be afraid to draw through overlapping shapes. You'll erase some of those lines later.

Step Four:
Here is the sketch in the stages right before coloring. I've erased some of the pencil lines that I don't want. Now is the time to make any adjustments to your sketch. You can even add your own background if you like. It's your sketch! Go for it!

Step Five:
This is my sketch after adding my first layer of color. I used Copic markers in a limited palette of browns and grays. If you like, you can try inking your pencil sketch then scan it and color it in Photoshop. Maybe you can try something daring like cutting up construction paper to make a collage! Maybe you'd prefer his robe to be a different color? How about adding some funky polka dots or patterns! Don't be afraid to experiment!

Step Six:
I want to outline the figure but not with inks. Today I'll use colored pencil, which gives the artwork a softer appearance than ink. I used Prismacolor Dark Brown for this sketch, but you can use colored markers if you want.

Step Seven:
In the final step, I added a few subtle highlights and a few speckles on the ground to suggest small pebbles or rocks. There are all kinds of Lurmen to draw. Can you create your own? What kind of clothes would you give him or her? What kind of shoes? What color is its fur? What's his or her name? Try it. You might have more fun than you thought. Good luck and keep drawing!
