Collectors and fans alike have a chance to own one-of-a-kind Star Wars art pieces while giving to a good cause with The Empire Muggs Back. Lucasfilm asked artists, comic book creators, toy designers, and celebrity fans to get out their markers, paint brushes and glue guns and transform blank Mighty Muggs (donated by Hasbro) into custom Star Wars art which will be auctioned by The Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Starwars.com chats with artist Jamie Snell about his process for turning a blank Hasbro Mighty Mugg into Darth Sion.
What made you want to do a more obscure Star Wars character for your Mighty Mugg art piece?
It was difficult on which thousands of characters to choose from. I know a lot of the popular characters have already been done in Mighty Mugg form. I love the Expanded Universe and wanted to show off that side more. I finally chose Darth Sion from the Knights of the Old Republic II game. There is hardly anything out there on him at all.
What was your step-by-step process? What materials did you use?
First I sprayed on some primer, let it dry. Then I taped off some areas to have some clean lines for the pants and glove. I just had fun mixing up acrylics for the ashy destroyed skin color. I used a thin paint brush and pen for the cracks and damaged look of his skin.
What were some of the challenges you faced while making your art piece?
I am use to working in 2-D, flat pages or a canvas, not a 3-dimensional figure.
Why do you think Star Wars fans will love The Empire Muggs Back project?
It's for a good cause! It's Star Wars done by popular artists, comics book creators, toy designers and celebrity fans; so why wouldn't they?
The final Mighty Muggs art pieces will be on display at San Diego Comic-Con and on StarWars.com.
