    Super Battle Droid

The infantry used by the Trade Federation had several major shortcomings that were carefully revisited by the battle droids' designers. From that research came the super battle droid, a bulkier, stronger, and more advanced version of the standard mechanical soldier. The super battle droid requires no overriding command signal to operate, and thus has a limited degree of independence. They are fearless and tireless, and will run at full speed into combat, their cannons extended, firing until they have reduced their targets to smoldering ruins.

History

A Super Battle Droid standing with Count Dooku on Geonosis

The Trade Federation’s defeat on Naboo revealed the flaws of regular B1 battle droids, and led the Techno Union to design and introduce the B2 “super” battle droid, a heavy infantry model that could operate independently and was designed solely for combat.

Super Battle Droids

Super battle droids weren’t terribly intelligent, but they didn’t need to be – they were designed to deal out punishment and take the same, advancing on objectives until all opposition had been eliminated.

A handful of super battle droids survived the Clone Wars and even beyond the age of the Empire. As the First Order was trying to claim power over the galaxy, the pirate Kragan Gorr purchased a battalion of super battle droids from the mercenary Sidon Ithano. Gorr was planning to use the combat tech in his quest to take over the Colossus, but the old droids were in desperate need of repairs.

  • B2s pressed the attack on the Onderon rebels, hunting them through the planet’s jungles with their built-in blasters and missile launchers.

  • Super battle droids could be fooled relatively easily when given orders that were too complicated for their cognitive units. The Republic pit droid WAC-47 claimed he was testing security measures and managed to convince two B2s to follow him into a closet and trap themselves inside.

  • At Ringo Vinda, Republic forces faced upgraded versions of the B2-RPs. These new models sported jetpacks with thrusters that attached to the droids’ shoulders and ankles, making them more maneuverable.

  • Super battle droids stormed Scipio during the Banking Clan crisis, killing Commander Thorn and many of his troops.

  • During the Battle of Coruscant, super battle droids patrolling the corridors of the Invisible Hand apprehended R2-D2. But the “stupid little astro-droid” proved anything but, squirting the startled B2s with oil.

  • A blast from Artoo’s rockets then ignited the oil, leaving the luckless super battle droids engulfed in flames while the astromech smugly continued his mission.

    B2-RP battle droid

Often referred to as rocket droids or jetpack droids, B2-RPs are modified B2 super battle droids. The Techno Union engineered them to incorporate rocket pack and compact repulsorlift technology. They’re different from other B2s in other ways as well, including their blue and white markings on their torso, arms, and legs.

    Confederacy of Independent Systems

The Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Separatist Alliance, was a collection of star systems and corporate titans that left the Republic and fought for independence against the Republic’s clone armies and Jedi Knights. The charismatic former Jedi Count Dooku was the Alliance’s political leader, while its military power came from credits and assets donated by powerful galactic trade groups. No one suspected that the Alliance was actually a tool of Darth Sidious, who had engineered the Clone Wars as part of a Sith plot to rule the galaxy.

    Battle Droid

Rather than use flesh-and-blood warriors, the Separatists prefer mindlessly loyal soldiers that are easily controlled. The soulless ranks of their armies are dominated by tall, thin B1 battle droids built as mechanical imitations of their Geonosian designers. Battle droids can be controlled by centralized command centers such as the Trade Federation’s enormous Droid Control Ships, or programmed for independent action. They often suffer programming glitches that manifest as personality quirks. Battle droids are dim-witted and no match for clone troopers or Jedi, but they weren’t designed to be smart – they were designed to overwhelm Republic civilians through sheer numbers, something they do very effectively.

    Droideka

Unlike the spindly battle droids, whose humanoid builds allow them a degree of versatility, droidekas are designed with one sole function in mind: the complete annihilation of their targets. Slung at the end of heavy arms are immense twin blasters, which unleash destructive energy at a pounding pace. The destroyer droid can completely envelope itself in a globe of protective energy via its compact deflector shield generators, though at the expense of its mobility. Although slow and awkward on its three-legged gait, the droideka can transform into a much speedier, disk-shaped form.

    R2-D2

A reliable and versatile astromech droid, R2-D2 has served Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, and Luke Skywalker in turn, showing great bravery in rescuing his masters and their friends from many perils. A skilled starship mechanic and fighter pilot's assistant, he has an unlikely but enduring friendship with the fussy protocol droid C-3PO.

  • Geonosis

    Geonosis

A harsh rocky world less than a parsec away from Tatooine, Geonosis is a ringed planet beyond the borders of the Galactic Republic. Its uninviting surface is made up of harsh, rocky desert, and the creatures that evolved on Geonosis are well equipped to survive in the brutal environment. The most advanced lifeform are the Geonosians, sentient insectoids that inhabit towering spire-hives. The Geonosians maintain large factories for the production of droids and weapons for the Separatist cause in the Clone Wars. After the Clone Wars, the Empire chose Geonosis as the construction site of the first Death Star, restricting travel to the system and sterilizing the planet’s surface.
