    Bail Organa

A member of Alderaan's royal family and the planet's representative to the Republic Senate since the time of the Clone Wars, Bail Organa earned respect on Coruscant for his honesty and his commitment to justice. Prior to the fall of the Republic, Bail served alongside Senator Padmé Amidala as a member of Chancellor Palpatine's Loyalist Committee. The two became close friends, and recruited like-minded allies to prevent Palpatine's alarming grabs for power. At the end of the war, Bail Organa adopted Padmé's daughter Leia and raised her as an Alderaanian princess. While representing Alderaan in the Imperial Senate, he continued to work secretly with allies such as Mon Mothma and Ahsoka Tano to assist rebel cells scattered across the galaxy, working towards the day that a unified Rebellion could emerge.

History

Bail Organa, prominent Senators, and Jedi Masters watching a transmission from Obi-Wan Kenobi

The idealistic Senator Bail Organa represented the ancient Core World of Alderaan in the last years of the Republic. When the Separatist Crisis exploded into the Clone Wars, Organa became a leading member of the Senate’s Loyalist faction, though he was uneasy about the accumulation of wartime powers by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.

Organa sought to balance his humanitarian instincts with his support for the war by aiding relief efforts and helping refugees. He also hunted for a peaceful solution to the conflict and sought to limit the Supreme Chancellor’s powers. Such efforts made him an ally of like-minded Senators such as Chandrila’s Ahsoka and Naboo’s Padmé Amidala.

Organa also worked with the Jedi Order, forging close working relationships with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. When word spread on Coruscant that clone troopers had put down a Jedi rebellion, Organa went to the Jedi Temple to see for himself, but had to retreat.

Bail Organa and wife adopt Leia

Organa witnessed Palpatine’s Declaration of Empire with horror, and began working in secret with Mon Mothma to create a network of resistance cells opposed to the Empire. He and his wife Breha adopted Leia, the orphaned infant daughter of Padmé and Anakin Skywalker, and raised the girl as their own.

Parenting was not easy, and when Leia was 10 years old the Organas endured the terror of losing their child when she was kidnapped by mercenaries secretly working for the Inqusitorius. Bail turned to his old friend, the Jedi now living under the alias Ben Kenobi, who rescued the young princess and saw her safely returned to her home.

As the Empire tightened its grip on the galaxy, Organa began quietly aiding rebel cells in the galaxy and identifying those who might help the cause of freedom. He groomed his adopted daughter Leia to take his place in both the Imperial Senate and the secret Rebellion.

In the end, Organa’s outward loyalty to the Empire couldn’t save him. The Empire disbanded the Senate and intercepted Leia trying to bring the stolen Death Star plans to Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. To demonstrate the terrifying power of the battle station, Grand Moff Tarkin turned its superlaser on Alderaan, incinerating the planet and its inhabitants.

  • Organa and his allies continued to seek a peaceful solution to the war, meeting with Separatist Senators on the non-aligned planet of Mandalore.

  • When Senator Rush Clovis sought Republic approval for his appointment to run the InterGalactic Banking Clan, Organa questioned him sternly, mindful of the Scipio Senator’s previous entanglements with Separatist leaders.

  • As the Clone Wars wound down, Organa and Mothma began to seek out other Senators worried that Palpatine would refuse to surrender his wartime powers. Meeting in secret, they planned resistance to his rule. These meetings would help lay the foundations for the Rebel Alliance.

  • Amid reports that the Jedi had tried to take over the Republic, Organa traveled to the Jedi Temple and found the ancient structure in flames. He retreated after watching clone troopers gun down a Padawan, and decided he had to save any surviving Jedi that might return and be captured or killed.

  • Organa picked up Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, both survivors of Order 66, and returned to Coruscant. While his Jedi friends sought answers at the Temple, Organa listened grimly to Palpatine’s declaration of the First Galactic Empire.

  • Yoda’s confrontation with Palpatine ended in failure, and Organa rescued the Jedi Master. On Polis Massa, they watched as medical droids delivered Padmé Amidala’s twins – the son and daughter of Anakin Skywalker – before their mother’s death.

  • Organa, Obi-Wan and Yoda decided to separate the twins, with Obi-Wan watching over Luke on Tatooine while Bail and his wife Breha adopted Leia and raised her as their own. The Empire had won, but hope was not extinguished.

  • Organa returned to Alderaan with Leia, and served for years in the Imperial Senate, attempting to shield the people of the galaxy from the worst Imperial abuses. He groomed his adopted daughter to take his place in the Senate and assist the Rebellion he and Mothma were nurturing in secret.

  • Organa was always on the lookout for people whose talents might assist the rebel cause – such as Hera Syndulla’s cell of Lothal rebels, whose capabilities R2-D2 and C-3PO witnessed firsthand during one mission.

  • Organa reached out to the Lothal rebels after their successful raid in the Mustafar system, introducing them to one of his key agents: Fulcrum, the former Padawan Ahsoka Tano.

  • Bail and Breha died when Grand Moff Tarkin used the Death Star’s superlaser to incinerate Alderaan, a stunning demonstration of Imperial might intended to snuff out the fires of rebellion. But Leia continued the fight – and the martyred Organas became potent symbols of the struggle to restore freedom to the galaxy.

    Rebel Alliance

The Rebel Alliance stood bravely against the evil of the Galactic Empire, never backing down despite overwhelming odds. Formed from resistance movements that arose during the Clone Wars, the Rebellion worked in secret for decades to overthrow the Emperor and restore democracy to the galaxy. Eventually, armed with the firepower of ships like the X-wing and A-wing, and the leadership of figures including Princess Leia and Admiral Ackbar, the Rebel Alliance triumphed over the Empire at the Battle of Endor.

    Alderaan

If ever one needed an example of the irredeemable evil of the Empire, look no further than the shattered remains of Alderaan. A peaceful world of lush valleys and snow-capped mountains, Alderaan was once regarded for its natural beauty, its tranquility, and the sophistication of its arts and culture. Before the Imperial uprising, Alderaan was represented in the waning days of the Republic by such venerated politicians as Bail Organa. In fact, Alderaan was one of the earliest supporters of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, though its officials prudently kept all ties to the Rebellion secret. Despite such discretion, the Empire knew it to be a haven of rebel activity, making it a target of reprisal as soon as the Death Star was operational.

    Leia Organa

Princess Leia Organa was one of the greatest leaders of the Rebel Alliance, fearless on the battlefield and dedicated to ending the Empire’s tyranny. Daughter of Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, sister of Luke Skywalker, and with a soft spot for scoundrels, Leia ranked among the galaxy’s great heroes. But life under the New Republic proved difficult for her. Sidelined by a new generation of political leaders, she struck out on her own to oppose the First Order as founder of the Resistance. These setbacks in her political career were accompanied by more personal losses, which she endured with her seemingly inexhaustible will.

    Galactic Senate

At the height of its rule, the Galactic Republic was governed by a body of Senators representing the many worlds of the galaxy. Within the cavernous Senate rotunda, hundreds of politicians would fill the viewing platforms that lined the curved walls. The Senate’s power gradually eroded after it voted emergency powers to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine during the Clone Wars, and the body was sharply divided between supporters of the war and those seeking peace. After Palpatine declared himself Emperor, power was increasingly wielded by regional governors. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, Palpatine disbanded the Senate.
