From the Movies
Protocol droids are vital in smoothing differences encountered by the many farflung cultures interacting on a regular basis throughout the galaxy. Programmed in etiquette and equipped with formidable language skills, protocol droids assist diplomats and politicians and also serve as administrative aides and companions for high-ranking officials. They come in as many shapes and sizes, but most are humanoid, like the company they keep. C-3PO and TC-14 are examples of protocol droids. From the Expanded Universe
The protocol droids developed by Cybot Galactica and other large manufacturers feature an advanced neural network called the SyntheTech AA-1 VerboBrain. This elite cognitive module gives a protocol droid very distinct personality and a strong sense of individuality. As a result, protocol droids personalities are as vivid as those of sentients, complete with real emotions and potential for growth. The sophisticated TranLang III Communcations module found in the standard 3PO unit is capable of reproducing over six million languages. Its speech/sound system allows a protocol droid to reproduce any sound it hears.
Behind the Scenes
A number of See-Threepio's cousins are seen throughout the Star Wars films, all built from the same costume template. These include the Trade Federation's silvery TC-14, the icy-shelled K-3PO found in the Echo Base command center, and the foul-mouthed E-3PO found on Cloud City. Keywords: Databank - The Clone Wars, Databank - Expanded Universe, Databank - Episode I, Databank - Episode II, Databank - Episode III, Databank - Episode IV, Databank - Episode V, Databank - Episode VI
