StarWars.com chats with Topps Editor of Entertainment/Licensing David Waldeck about the exciting, new set.
What can fans expect to see in the new Star Wars Galaxy 5 cards?
This series has tons of brilliant, new art and a combination of rare and "best of" re-purposed art. The New Visions will be driven by theme for this particular set. They'll be divided by small subsets such as: Women of Star Wars, Spectres of the Sith, Path of the Jedi, plus a bunch more. The other art sections are more focused into categories such as Star Wars Unleashed (all by Clark Mitchell), The Old Republic and Art of Celebration. By concentrating on specific material like that, we're able to make those subsets more comprehensive and thorough.
What makes this set different than previous sets?
The series has a different pattern of organization. Instead of a pure potpourri of art like we've seen in the past, we've chosen a handful of topics and themes that the art works from. To a casual observer the art can look like it was planned the same as the previous sets, but if you know the themes are there and you know Star Wars, you'll be able to pick them right out. The themes are as follows: The Journey of Obi-Wan and Anakin, Women of Star Wars, Propaganda, Spectres of the Sith, Battle of Hoth, Mos Eisley Cantina, Millennium Falcon, Path of the Jedi (Luke), Star Wars by Decades, Royalty and oddity.
Inserts include: Sketch Cards, Shaped Sketches, Manga Sketch Cards, Foil Cards w/ parallels, Etched Foil Cards, Galaxy Autographs (Different than last time, for this round it's actor autographs on cards featuring the Joe Smith art from Series 1 Lost Galaxy. Target and Hobby markets will both have unique sketch card designs. Autographs include: Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Bulloch, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker and David Prowse.
Why do you think fans and collectors will love the new cards?
They are all wonderfully done in terms of the new work and much of the existing art is pretty rare or has never been presented in its entirety. The scope of the art is very balanced encompasses all six films plus some Clone Wars and assorted Expanded Universe elements.
We are very pleased with how they turned out, and we're all tremendous Star Wars fans. They really came out awesome and I think people will love them.
