    Kamino

Once purged from the otherwise complete Jedi Archives was all evidence of the mysterious world of Kamino. A lonely world beyond the Outer Rim and just south of the Rishi Maze, few could have predicted that Kamino would become a key contributor to a massive shift in political power in the final days of the Republic. Kamino is a planet of endless oceans and storms. Few features mark its surface, save for massive stilt-mounted cities wherein reside the planet's natural inhabitants, the Kaminoans. From Tipoca City, the planet's prime minister rules. Lama Su and Kamino’s chief medical scientist Nala Se closely monitor the operations of Kamino's most prized export -- clones -- even after the Clone Wars reaches a conclusion.

History

Tipoca City

An assassination on Coruscant led Obi-Wan Kenobi to the remote planet of Kamino – which, oddly, had been erased from the Jedi Archives. Obi-Wan learned that the Kaminoans were known for creating clones – and all they cared about was whether one could pay for their services. His investigation brought him to a stormy waterworld dotted with cities on stilts.

To Obi-Wan’s surprise, the Kaminoans had been expecting him. A decade before, they had begun work on a massive clone army to defend the Republic at the request of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. Obi-Wan pondered this mystery as he toured the Kaminoan facilities: Sifo-Dyas had been dead for years, and the Jedi Council had never authorized construction of a clone army.

Obi-Wan attempting to apprehend Jango Fett on kamino

The assassin Obi-Wan had trailed was Jango Fett, whose genetic material had been used to create the clones. Fett fought with Obi-Wan when the Jedi tried to capture him for questioning, then fled to Geonosis. After Supreme Chancellor Palpatine authorized the creation of an army to defend the Republic, Yoda came to Kamino to take command of the clones.

Trident-class assault ships attacking Tipoca City

Kamino’s clones became the core of the Grand Army of the Republic, commanded by the Jedi in a wartime bargain. Kamino’s importance to clone production and training made it a Separatist target, with the Jedi and clones fighting to defend it from assaults by General Grievous and Asajj Ventress. With the clones essential to the Republic war effort, few sought to investigate the army’s mysterious origins.

          • Clone cadets of all ages joined the clone troopers to defend Tipoca City, ferrying ammunition and supplies to the front-line troops. The clones regarded Kamino as their home – to them, this attack was personal.

          • In the ocean, Obi-Wan escaped Ventress’s attack by hitching a ride on the back of a native aiwha. The assault was beaten back, but it had been a feint to hide Ventress’s real mission, which was to steal a sample of the clones’ DNA from the Kaminoan labs.

          • Later in the war, the clone trooper Tup killed his Jedi General during battle. Amid fears that a Separatist plot was behind Tup’s fit of madness, Captain Rex and ARC Trooper Fives escorted Tup to Kamino for evaluation.

          • Nala Se began the evaluation with Shaak Ti and an agitated Fives observing. Nala Se wanted to terminate Tup and examine the cadaver – a ruthless course of action that Ti rejected. When the Jedi Master said the Jedi Council was responsible for the clones’ care, Nala Se replied coldly that their genetic makeup was Kaminoan property.

          • Nala Se told Lama Su that Tup’s implanted inhibitor chip had malfunctioned, resulting in a premature activation of protocol 66. The Kaminoans contacted Count Dooku, who told them the chip’s existence must be kept secret from the Jedi.

          • Working with medical droid AZI-3, Fives discovered Tup’s chip and ordered the droid to remove it, which resulted in Tup’s death. To his shock, Fives learned all the clones had such a chip implanted before birth. But why?

          • Fives confronted Nala Se, who said the chips prevented the clones from being overly aggressive, and were implanted on orders from Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. Fives demanded that the chips be removed from all clones in the army. His Kamino investigations brought the Jedi startlingly close to discovering the implants’ real purpose – to ensure the clones obeyed orders from Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. But the Jedi never made the final connection – the true purpose of the clone army remained a secret until Order 66.

            Clone Troopers

At the time of their introduction, the Republic clone troopers represented the future of galactic warfare. Far superior to battle droids, the clone troopers formed the backbone of the Republic's new military that waged war against the forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. So symbolic were they of the times, the galaxy-wide conflict that saw their debut took its name from their ranks: the Clone Wars.

            Lama Su

Once the lanky Prime Minister of the remote world of Kamino, Lama Su oversaw the creation of the Galactic Republic's first clone armies. That effort gave his storm-swept homeworld influence in the Republic, but also made it a target of the Separatist military. At the dawn of the new Empire, Lama Su remained in power until the Imperial bombardment destroyed Tipoca City. Imprisoned at Mount Tantiss, Lama Su continued to cooperate with his Imperial captors, exposing Omega as the key to controlling the scientist Nala Se.

            Nala Se

As Kamino’s chief medical scientist, Nala Se played a key role in engineering the Grand Army of the Republic — and worked to protect the army’s secrets. She cared for clones injured on the battlefield, supervising their rehabilitation even when Separatist attacks threatened her own life as well as the lives of soldiers, and kept the experimental clone called Omega as her medical assistant. But Nala Se had a ruthless side as well. Following the orders of Count Dooku — whom she knew as Lord Tyranus — she sought to conceal knowledge of the bio-chips implanted in the clones to ensure that they obeyed protocols such as Order 66. After the dawn of the Empire, she was taken prisoner following the destruction of Tipoca City and stationed at the Imperial facility at Mount Tantiss. In her defeat, she was made to serve the Emperor in his quest for control over the cloning process.

            Taun We

A beautiful sylph-like Kaminoan, Taun We is the administrative aide to the Prime Minister of Kamino, Lama Su. When Obi-Wan Kenobi arrived at the rain-swept platforms of Tipoca City, he was greeted by the gentle Taun We. Taun We explained that the Kaminoans had long been expecting the arrival of a Jedi envoy, since a Jedi representative, Master Sifo-Dyas, commissioned a clone army a decade earlier. Kenobi bluffed his way into the heart of the cloning operation, and had the naive Taun We introduce him to the original source of the clones, Jango Fett.

            Jango Fett

In the final years of the Republic, Jango Fett was regarded as the best bounty hunter in the galaxy. A proficient marksman and unarmed combatant, Fett was covered in a sleek armored suit that concealed his scarred face. His combat gear featured an arsenal of weaponry, including retractable wrist blades, a snare, dual blaster pistols and other more exotic tools of the trade. In combat, Jango used his harnessed jetpack to gain the advantage of speed and height over his enemies. The backpack also carried a nasty surprise -- an explosive rocket could be launched from it. For interstellar travel, Jango traveled aboard his well-worn starship, Slave I.
