    Droideka

Unlike the spindly battle droids, whose humanoid builds allow them a degree of versatility, droidekas are designed with one sole function in mind: the complete annihilation of their targets. Slung at the end of heavy arms are immense twin blasters, which unleash destructive energy at a pounding pace. The destroyer droid can completely envelope itself in a globe of protective energy via its compact deflector shield generators, though at the expense of its mobility. Although slow and awkward on its three-legged gait, the droideka can transform into a much speedier, disk-shaped form.

History

Droideka's aboard a Droid Control Ship

Originally built by the Colicoids, destroyer droids – generally known as droidekas -- were among the most formidable Separatist battle droids, feared for their deadly combination of speed, firepower and defensive capabilities. Even Jedi gave these killing machines a wide berth.

Droidekas during The Clone Wars

Fortunately for the Republic, droidekas were far more expensive than other Separatist droids, and so encountered much more rarely on the battlefield. Separatist commanders used them in a range of roles, sending them into battle as heavy infantry and reinforcements and employing them as bodyguards and even executioners.

During the Clone Wars, both Jedi and clones learned techniques for thwarting destroyers, figuring out how to penetrate their shields and use their own capabilities against them.

  • When droidekas attacked Anakin and Luminara Unduli, Captain Rex was prepared with heavy weaponry. Not even a droideka’s shield could withstand a blast from a missile launcher.

  • Droidekas served as reinforcements in the Separatist prison known as the Citadel, bedeviling the party of Jedi and clones sent to rescue Even Piell and Captain Tarkin.

  • On Onderon, Rex and the Jedi taught Steela Gerrera’s rebels how to defeat droidekas. One useful strategy: roll grenades slowly enough to avoid triggering their shields. But this tactic wasn’t easy to master – or to employ in the heat of battle.

  • During the fight for the Ringo Vinda space station, destroyers drove back Anakin’s clone troops, demoralized and uncertain after the murder of Jedi Master Tiplar by one of their own.

  • During the Battle of Coruscant, droidekas helped capture Anakin, Obi-Wan, R2-D2 and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine as they attempted to escape Grievous’s flagship, the Invisible Hand.

    Battle Droid

Rather than use flesh-and-blood warriors, the Separatists prefer mindlessly loyal soldiers that are easily controlled. The soulless ranks of their armies are dominated by tall, thin B1 battle droids built as mechanical imitations of their Geonosian designers. Battle droids can be controlled by centralized command centers such as the Trade Federation’s enormous Droid Control Ships, or programmed for independent action. They often suffer programming glitches that manifest as personality quirks. Battle droids are dim-witted and no match for clone troopers or Jedi, but they weren’t designed to be smart – they were designed to overwhelm Republic civilians through sheer numbers, something they do very effectively.

    Trade Federation

One of the wealthiest corporate organizations in the galaxy, the Trade Federation controlled most of the interstellar shipping passing through the Rim territories. The Trade Federation was headed by Viceroy Nute Gunray, and even had its own representative in the Republic Senate to lobby for even greater power. On the orders of Darth Sidious, the Trade Federation sent its battle droids to invade Naboo to create a government crisis. During the Clone Wars, the Trade Federation secretly signed on as a member of Count Dooku's Separatist organization, though representatives in the Senate tried to deny this.

    Confederacy of Independent Systems

The Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Separatist Alliance, was a collection of star systems and corporate titans that left the Republic and fought for independence against the Republic’s clone armies and Jedi Knights. The charismatic former Jedi Count Dooku was the Alliance’s political leader, while its military power came from credits and assets donated by powerful galactic trade groups. No one suspected that the Alliance was actually a tool of Darth Sidious, who had engineered the Clone Wars as part of a Sith plot to rule the galaxy.

  • Geonosis

    Geonosis

A harsh rocky world less than a parsec away from Tatooine, Geonosis is a ringed planet beyond the borders of the Galactic Republic. Its uninviting surface is made up of harsh, rocky desert, and the creatures that evolved on Geonosis are well equipped to survive in the brutal environment. The most advanced lifeform are the Geonosians, sentient insectoids that inhabit towering spire-hives. The Geonosians maintain large factories for the production of droids and weapons for the Separatist cause in the Clone Wars. After the Clone Wars, the Empire chose Geonosis as the construction site of the first Death Star, restricting travel to the system and sterilizing the planet’s surface.

  • Onderon

    Onderon

In its earliest ages of civilization, Onderon was a world marked with savage jungles that were filled with dangerous creatures. To survive, the primitive human inhabitants of the planet protected themselves behind the walls of fortified settlements. Over time, these grew to become enormous walled cities, like the planet's capital, Iziz. In the modern era, during the time of the Clone Wars, the planet's monarch King Sanjay Rash allied Onderon to the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Many Onderonians, however, refused to recognize the legitimacy of Sanjay's rule -- they preferred the neutral stance championed by former monarch Ramsis Dendup, whom Rash ousted.

    Sniper Droid

A specialized variant of the powerful destroyer droid, the sniper droid retains the basic shape of the curved-back, claw-footed droideka. Like its more common cousin, the sniper droid rolls into position in a disc shape, and then unfurls when ready for combat. Unlike the droideka, the sniper droid has only one weapon -- a finely calibrated long-barrel blaster rifle. When in combat mode, the sniper droid's armored shell swings forward, becoming an armored shield with a embrasure from where the rifle barrel emerges.
