Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Season 3, Episode 1 //
At the time of their introduction, the Republic clone troopers represented the future of galactic warfare. Far superior to battle droids, the clone troopers formed the backbone of the Republic's new military that waged war against the forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. So symbolic were they of the times, the galaxy-wide conflict that saw their debut took its name from their ranks: the Clone Wars.
Purged from the otherwise complete Jedi Archives is all evidence of the mysterious world of Kamino. A lonely world beyond the Outer Rim and just south of the Rishi Maze, few could have predicted that Kamino would become a key contributor to a massive shift in political power in the final days of the Republic. Kamino is a planet of endless oceans and storms. Few features mark its surface, save for massive stilt-mounted cities wherein reside the planet's natural inhabitants, the Kaminoans. From Tipoca City, the planet's Prime Minister rules. Lama Su closely monitored the operations of Kamino's most prized export: clones.
A wise and patient Jedi Master, the Togruta Shaak Ti fought at the Battle of Geonosis, and supervised the training of clone cadets on Kamino. There, she struggled to balance the necessity of producing capable troopers with compassion for the clones as living beings. Ti helped defend Kamino against Separatist attack, balancing assignments in the field with her duties on the Jedi Council.
During the Clone Wars, Clone 99 was a malformed result of the cloning process. Due to his genetic defects and physical limitations, he was considered unfit for combat, and remained behind on Kamino to support the training efforts of his clone "brothers." Though his responsibilities were menial and his job consisted primarily of janitorial duties, he took pride in his work and in his connection to the Republic's noble heroes. Despite (or perhaps because of) his physical shortcomings, Clone 99 was gentle, thoughtful and wise, offering a unique perspective for cadets facing the rigors of military training. During the Separatist invasion of Tipoca City, he assisted a group of clone cadets in their defense of the cloning facility.
Also known as CT-27-5555, Fives trained with Domino Squad on Kamino before being shipped out to the Rishi Moon listening outpost. He survived the Separatist attack on the station there, and was transferred to the 501st Legion alongside his squadmate and fellow survivor, Echo. Fives and Echo were promoted to ARC trooper status after the defense of Kamino from Separatist invaders. He and Echo were later assigned with the difficult mission of freeing Republic prisoners from the daunting Citadel prison installation on Lola Sayu. Though Fives survived that arduous assignment, Echo tragically fell in battle, leaving Fives as the sole survivor of the Domino Squad training squad.
Rather than use flesh-and-blood warriors, the Separatists prefer mindlessly loyal soldiers that are unquestioning of orders, and easily controlled. The soulless ranks of their battle droid armies consists of tall, thin robotic soldiers with exposed joints and bone-white or rust brown metal finishes that gives them an eerie resemblance to animated skeletons. Battle droids are very efficient, and can be controlled from centralized command centers, like the enormous Droid Control Ships used by the Trade Federation. They are dim-witted, often suffering programming glitches that give them quirky personalities that are too slow to adapt to enemies like Jedi Knights and clone troopers.
