    AAT Battle Tank

The marriage of repulsorlift technology and heavy armor has resulted in formidable floating tanks known as AATs. These assault tanks form the frontline of Trade Federation armored infantry divisions, as well as Separatist forces during the Clone Wars. A crew of battle droids drives the battle tank and operates the array of laser and projectile weaponry carried by the vehicle.

History

AAT's during the Trade Federation attack on Naboo

Designed by Baktoid Armor Workshop, the Armored Assault Tank first saw service during the Trade Federation’s invasion of Naboo, anchoring the droid armies’ heavy infantry.

AAT's during the Battle of Malastare

The AAT’s heavy weaponry made it a mainstay of the Separatist war machine, with armored divisions steamrolling opposition on many Republic worlds.

  • Ventress had the military might, but the clones had Yoda, who led the droid army on a merry chase, then ignited his lightsaber and made short work of the AATs.

  • On Maridun, the Separatist weapons researcher Lok Durd brought AATs to subdue the planet’s population of pacifist Lurmen. Durd then tested a modified AAT, the Defoliator Tank, on the planet’s vegetation.

  • Anakin, Ahsoka, and Aayla Secura joined a small force of clones and Lurmen to defeat Durd’s droids, with Anakin destroying the Defoliator Tank and capturing the Separatist researcher.

  • On Ryloth, the tactical droid TX-20 defended a key artillery position by using Twi’lek prisoners as living shields, preventing Republic bombardment. But TX-20’s gambit failed when the Twi’leks rose up, swarming his AAT and tearing him mechanical limb from limb.

  • The Republic advance on Ryloth’s capital city of Lessu was a grueling one, as AATs rained fire on Republic AT-TEs advancing along a winding cliffside road. Mace Windu and clone scouts destroyed the AATs using mobile AT-RTs.

  • On Geonosis, Republic forces landed under heavy fire, winding up short of their designated landing zone. Geonosian drones and Separatist droids then launched a deadly counterattack using AATs.

  • After the collapse of the Separatist defenses on Geonosis, Archduke Poggle the Lesser fled to the Progate Temple in an AAT pressed into service as a transport.

  • On Malastare, the Republic’s experimental electro-proton bomb proved a highly effective weapon, shutting down a Separatist droid army with an electromagnetic pulse that left deactivated AATs sitting still on a silent battlefield.

  • On Naboo, General Grievous’s attempted alliance with the Gungans came to naught when Minister Rish Loo’s treachery was revealed and Grievous' AATs and battle droids were shut down, leading to the cyborg general’s capture by the Gungans.

  • Grievous survived that reversal, and led Dooku’s invasion of Dathomir. His AATs advanced through the planet’s gloom, massacring Mother Talzin’s Nightsisters.

  • AATs were once again in the vanguard as the Separatists occupied Onderon, supporting the puppet king Sanjay Rash.

  • The Jedi Council sent Jedi and clones to train Onderon’s rebels in insurgent tactics, such as how to disable an AAT with electromagnetic pulse grenades.

  • The Onderon rebels soon had to test their mastery of these new tactics, as King Rash’s droid forces attacked their jungle camp with AATs.

  • Steela Gerrera’s rebels infiltrated Onderon’s capital of Iziz, where they deactivated and captured an AAT after a pitched fight with a battle-droid patrol.

  • Steela rebooted the tank’s systems and the rebels used its heavy cannon to destroy Iziz’s power generator, leaving the capital in darkness.

  • King Rash’s forces counterattacked, chasing the rebels into the jungles. Steela’s rebels were able to handle the columns of AATs, but fell back when attacked by droid gunships.

  • On Florrum, Hondo Ohnaka paid the price for having captured Count Dooku when General Grievous overran his pirate base with AATs.

    Battle Droid

Rather than use flesh-and-blood warriors, the Separatists prefer mindlessly loyal soldiers that are easily controlled. The soulless ranks of their armies are dominated by tall, thin B1 battle droids built as mechanical imitations of their Geonosian designers. Battle droids can be controlled by centralized command centers such as the Trade Federation’s enormous Droid Control Ships, or programmed for independent action. They often suffer programming glitches that manifest as personality quirks. Battle droids are dim-witted and no match for clone troopers or Jedi, but they weren’t designed to be smart – they were designed to overwhelm Republic civilians through sheer numbers, something they do very effectively.

    Trade Federation

One of the wealthiest corporate organizations in the galaxy, the Trade Federation controlled most of the interstellar shipping passing through the Rim territories. The Trade Federation was headed by Viceroy Nute Gunray, and even had its own representative in the Republic Senate to lobby for even greater power. On the orders of Darth Sidious, the Trade Federation sent its battle droids to invade Naboo to create a government crisis. During the Clone Wars, the Trade Federation secretly signed on as a member of Count Dooku's Separatist organization, though representatives in the Senate tried to deny this.

    Confederacy of Independent Systems

The Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Separatist Alliance, was a collection of star systems and corporate titans that left the Republic and fought for independence against the Republic’s clone armies and Jedi Knights. The charismatic former Jedi Count Dooku was the Alliance’s political leader, while its military power came from credits and assets donated by powerful galactic trade groups. No one suspected that the Alliance was actually a tool of Darth Sidious, who had engineered the Clone Wars as part of a Sith plot to rule the galaxy.

    STAP

STAPs are lightweight reconnaissance and patrol vehicles used by the battle droids of the Trade Federation army (and later, the Separatist Alliance). Incorporating repulsorlift technology, the STAP (single trooper aerial platform) is a slim, agile craft sporting a pair of blaster cannons. STAPs are often deployed as support vehicles in conjunction with larger craft.

    DDT tank

Lok Durd, a weapons developer and general in the Separatist army, conceived of the Defoliator as a means of eradicating living troops and terrain while leaving the battle droid forces unscathed. Once detonated, a Defoliator capsule creates a growing radius of destructive energy that scorches all living matter in its path. To launch these specialized warheads, Durd developed the DDT -- the Defoliator deployment tank -- a modified AAT that can support a heavy artillery launcher as its primary turret armament. For increased stabilization, the tanks lower skirt extends further back than a standard AAT, increasing the length of the vehicle to over 12 meters.

    Jar Jar Binks

A clumsy, well-meaning Gungan outcast on Naboo, Jar Jar Binks struggled to prove his worth throughout his life. Putting his awkward past behind him, Jar Jar left the swamps of Naboo to enter the even murkier waters of Coruscant politics, becoming a representative for his people in the galactic capital. There, his best intentions and eagerness to serve were exploited by scheming Senators and others in positions of power.
