    Lux Bonteri

The son of Separatist Senator Mina Bonteri, Lux was young, idealistic, and skeptical of the aims of the Republic and the Jedi Knights. His father was a fervent supporter of the Separatists, and was killed by clone troopers on Aargonar. Lux did not know what to make of Ahsoka Tano and her visit to Separatist space. After a failed peace overture begun by Mina extended to the Republic, Lux’s mother died, assassinated on Count Dooku’s orders. After making an ill-fated effort to avenge her by killing Dooku, Lux joined the anti-Separatist resistance on his homeworld of Onderon. After the rebels defeated the Separatists, Lux became Onderon’s Republic Senator.

History

Lux Bonteri talking with Ahsoka Tano in his family's garden

The son of Separatist Senator Mina Bonteri, Lux was with his mother when her old friend Padmé Amidala and Ahsoka Tano traveled to Raxus in an attempt to start peace talks and end the Clone Wars. While Padmé and Mina negotiated, Lux and Ahsoka worked to overcome their initial suspicions of each other.

Lux Bonteri with an arm outstretched

The peace talks failed, with Count Dooku angrily reporting that Mina Bonteri had been killed in a Republic attack. But Lux discovered Dooku had lied – in fact, the Separatist leader had ordered Lux’s mother killed to sabotage the peace effort.

Pre Vizsla working together with Lux Bonteri

Lux joined up with Death Watch in an effort to avenge his mother and kill Dooku. But he soon came to regret the alliance – Death Watch, he discovered, had decayed into a pack of murderous bandits.

Lux Bonteri working together with Saw and Steela Gerrera

Escaping Death Watch, Lux returned to his homeworld of Onderon, where he joined a resistance movement aimed at overthrowing the planet’s new king and his Separatist allies. Despite their common cause, Lux often clashed with the resistance’s other two leaders, the siblings Saw and Steela Gerrera.

  • The rebels held off a Separatist attack and then entered the capital city of Iziz disguised as a merchant caravan. There, they began an armed campaign to subvert the Separatist occupation.

  • The rebels succeeded in destroying battle droids, but Iziz’s people refused to back their cause, fearful that the resistance would fail. Lux proposed an attack on a big, visible target to demonstrate the movement’s strength.

  • Lux and the rebels decided to target Iziz’s principal power generator, hampering the droids. The daring attack succeeded, but tensions were rising within the resistance. When the group voted to make Steela its leader, Saw couldn’t hide his disappointment.

  • The Separatist-backed King Rash decided to demonstrate his power by executing his popular predecessor, Dendup. Lux and Steela made plans for a public rescue, but Saw rushed off to try and save Dendup on his own – a dangerous and reckless course of action.

  • Saw was captured, but forces led by Steela and Lux saved him and Dendup. That led the capable veteran General Tandin to reconsider his loyalty to Rash and the Separatists, pledging himself to the resistance instead.

  • The Onderon rebellion was spreading – and a showdown with the Separatists loomed. But Lux, Saw and Steela disagreed about the best place for that battle.

  • Steela agreed with Ahsoka and King Dendup that the rebels should fight the Separatists in Onderon’s highlands, to minimize civilian casualties. With plans for the battle moving ahead, Steela grabbed Lux to give him a kiss, “just in case.”

  • The rebels fought well against the battle-droid infantry, but had to flee under bombardment from droid gunships. Lux, Saw and Steela broke their forces into small teams to deny the gunships easy targets.

  • The Jedi arranged a shipment of missiles delivered by the pirate Hondo Ohnaka. Now better armed, the Onderon rebels fought the droids again. They won the battle, with the Separatists withdrawing from Lux’s homeworld. But the price was heartbreaking – Steela died during the fighting, despite Lux’s attempts to save her.

  • With Onderon once more a part of the Republic, King Dendup appointed Lux as the planet’s Senator. He resolved to continue his mother’s work.

A Senator of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Mina Bonteri had been a friend to Padmé Amidala, serving as her mentor on Naboo. Padmé missed her friend dearly, but contact between the Separatist and Republic governments was illegal during the Clone Wars. Nonetheless, Padmé secretly voyaged to Raxus, where she developed a peace accord with Mina. Bonteri proposed the peace overture to the Separatist government, finding support. The corporate barons secretly profiting the war did not agree, however. Mina died under mysterious circumstances, and her peace effort died as well.

Dooku advanced Sidious’s secret plot to take over the galaxy, but forgot that betrayal is the nature of the Sith.

    Death Watch

The warrior clans of Mandalore were believed to have been wiped out ages ago, their tattered remnants exiled to the Concordia moon. But as the Clone Wars swept the galaxy, the treacherous governor Pre Vizsla resurrected the Mandalorians, and with them, their legendary combat armor that was feared across the galaxy. Backed by Count Dooku and the Separatists, Vizsla began building an army to retake Mandalore from the control of pacifists who were trying to bury violent Mandalore's past. As the coup became inopportune, Dooku abandoned the Death Watch. The warriors wandered the galaxy for a time, then helped conquer Mandalore as part of Darth Maul’s Shadow Collective. Maul then became Death Watch’s leader when he killed Pre Vizsla.

    Onderon Rebels

During the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic had little recourse with worlds that willingly sided with the Separatist Alliance -- the rules of engagement enforced by the Senate and the Jedi Order contained the battlefield to contested worlds. But what of planets where the Separatist banner did not garner unanimous support among its populace? When an insurgency on Onderon refused to recognize the legitimacy of its monarch and began a rebellion to oust both the king and the Separatist influence on the planet, Anakin Skywalker saw an opportunity: If the Jedi could train and equip the rebels on Onderon, these freedom-fighters would keep the Separatists occupied during the Clone Wars.

  • Onderon

    Onderon

In its earliest ages of civilization, Onderon was a world marked with savage jungles that were filled with dangerous creatures. To survive, the primitive human inhabitants of the planet protected themselves behind the walls of fortified settlements. Over time, these grew to become enormous walled cities, like the planet's capital, Iziz. In the modern era, during the time of the Clone Wars, the planet's monarch King Sanjay Rash allied Onderon to the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Many Onderonians, however, refused to recognize the legitimacy of Sanjay's rule -- they preferred the neutral stance championed by former monarch Ramsis Dendup, whom Rash ousted.
