The Y-wing is a workhorse starfighter has been in use since the Clone Wars. Used for dogfights and for bombing runs against capital ships and ground targets, Y-wings are often overshadowed by newer models such as the X-wing and the A-wing. But the Y-wing's historical importance is remarkable, and it has reliably served multiple generations of star pilots.
General Grievous led a campaign of terror while in command of the Separatist super cruiser Malevolence. To stop him, the Republic scrambled the Y-wing fighters of Shadow Squadron, which tracked down the Malevolence to the Ryndellia system and destroyed it.
Anakin Skywalker led Shadow Squadron in the assault of the Malevolence. He guided the squadron of Y-wing fighters through the treacherous Balmorra Run, a detour through a neebray-infested nebula often used by smugglers.
Ahsoka Tano served as tailgunner for Anakin Skywalker during the hunt for the Malevolence. From this vantage point, she saw the flaw in Anakin's headstrong frontal assault on the Malevolence's bridge. At her prompting, Anakin switched gears and had the Y-wings target the Malevolence's ion cannon instead.
The Empire's horrific Death Star was designed to take on battle fleets and destroy entire planets. Its defenses, however, were not prepared to deal with small snubfighters squeezing past its magnetic fields and turbolaser cannon emplacements. Rebel X-wings and Y-wings made repeated attack runs on the Death Star's vulnerable thermal exhaust port.
The Rebel Alliance was always short on pilots and equipment, and made do with whatever they could. Their Y-wing fighters -- outdated models from the Clone Wars -- saw extensive modification for use against the Empire.
