    Boss Nass

The stout and stern leader of the Gungans, Boss Nass was a proud keeper of his people's ways. His booming voice issued decrees on behalf of all the Gungans of Otoh Gunga. He kept a tight rein on Gungan affairs, continuing a longstanding custom of isolationism. Though Nass' temper is short, displays of courage and humility can pierce through his preconceptions. When Queen Amidala prostrated herself before the Gungan leader to request his aid in fighting off the Trade Federation invasion, he was impressed. Nass committed the Gungan Grand Army to wage war against invading battle droids.

History

Boss Nass addressing Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the hidden Gungan city

After the Trade Federation’s droid army attacked Naboo, Jar Jar Binks led Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to Otoh Gunga, where the Jedi appealed to Gungan leader Boss Nass for help. But Nass refused to listen to their pleas – he disliked the Naboo and believed the droid army would never find the Gungans’ hidden city.

Boss Nass and the Gungan people hiding in the Gungan Sacred Place

Nass was wrong – the droids drove the Gungans into the swamps. Nass and his people took refuge in the Gungan Sacred Place, where Padmé Amidala found them and begged for help. Pleased with the queen’s humility, Nass agreed to help fight the droids, beginning a new period of cooperation between Naboo’s two peoples.

  • A decade before the Clone Wars, Boss Nass served as leader of Naboo’s Gungans, conducting business from the underwater city of Otoh Gunga. Nass resented the human settlers of Naboo because of what he saw as their high-handed treatment of the Gungans.

  • After the Trade Federation invaded Naboo, the Gungan exile Jar Jar Binks brought two Jedi Knights – Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi – before the Rep Council. Nass gave them a transport to get them through Naboo’s planet core, but refused their entreaties that he help the Naboo. Nass thought the Gungans would be safe in Otoh Gunga, unaffected by what happened in the surface world.

  • As for Jar Jar, he had violated Otoh Gunga’s harsh nocombackie law and would be punished – by being pounded to death. When Qui-Gon protested that Jar Jar owed him a life debt, Nass sent the troublesome Gungan away with the two outsiders.

  • Nass was wrong about the droids – they drove the Gungans from their city, forcing them to seek refuge in the swamps. When Padmé Amidala returned from Coruscant to fight the Trade Federation, Jar Jar brought her to the Gungan Sacred Place, where his people had hidden from the droids.

  • Nass blamed the Naboo for the invasion, but Amidala surprised him by dropping to one knee and begging the Gungans for help. Nass was impressed by this show of humility, and agreed to join the fight.

  • Despite his exasperating ways, Jar Jar had brought the Gungans and the Naboo together. Nass rewarded him by appointing him as a general in the Gungan army – a promotion that left Jar Jar alarmed rather than pleased.

  • The alliance between the Naboo and the Gungans helped defeat the Trade Federation. Nass joined Amidala for a grand celebration in Theed, happily proclaiming a new era of peace between the planet’s peoples.

  • Nass would eventually yield his role as Gungan leader, but he never forgot his friendship with Amidala. After her death, he joined the solemn funeral procession wending through the streets of Theed.

    Padmé Amidala

Padmé Amidala was a courageous, hopeful leader, serving as Queen and then Senator of Naboo -- and was also handy with a blaster. Despite her ideals and all she did for the cause of peace, her secret, forbidden marriage to Jedi Anakin Skywalker would prove to have dire consequences for the galaxy.

    Gungan Grand Army

In contrast to the peaceful human colonists of Naboo, the native Gungans are a proud warrior species. The amphibians have long maintained a huge standing army -- the Gungan Grand Army -- as one of their proudest traditions. The Gungans prefer technology that is harmonious with the ecology of their world. Their weaponry is no different. The Gungan Grand Army uses domesticated animals for transport -- Gungan scouts ride swift-footed kaadu into combat, while hardy falumpasets and fambaas haul heavy weapons and shield generators into place.

    Jar Jar Binks

A clumsy, well-meaning Gungan outcast on Naboo, Jar Jar Binks struggled to prove his worth throughout his life. Putting his awkward past behind him, Jar Jar left the swamps of Naboo to enter the even murkier waters of Coruscant politics, becoming a representative for his people in the galactic capital. There, his best intentions and eagerness to serve were exploited by scheming Senators and others in positions of power.

    Otoh Gunga

Beneath the surface of Lake Paonga on Naboo is a spectacular Gungan city. A crowning achievement of unique Gungan technology, the city appears as a glittering cluster of jewel-like bubbles. The bubbles are hydrostatic force-fields that contain breathable atmospheres for the city's inhabitants. Though they are rigid enough to keep the water out, they can be breached by Gungans swimming to and from the city. The architecture of Otoh Gunga is sweeping in shape because Gungans actually grow the building material of their cities. Inside Otoh Gunga is the High Board Room of the Gungan Rep Council.

    Naboo

An idyllic world close to the border of the Outer Rim Territories, Naboo is inhabited by peaceful humans known as the Naboo, and an indigenous species of intelligent amphibians called the Gungans. Naboo's surface consists of swampy lakes, rolling plains and green hills. Its population centers are beautiful -- Naboo's river cities are filled with classical architecture and greenery, while the underwater Gungan settlements are a beautiful display of exotic hydrostatic bubble technology.

    Gungan

The Gungans are the native inhabitants of the planet Naboo, an amphibious species with hardy lungs capable of holding breath for extended periods. Their skeletal structure is extremely flexible, as it is made of cartilaginous material rather than hard bone. The long Gungan face has a tough yet flexible bill for burrowing and rooting out food. They have long muscular tongues with which they scoop mollusks and lesser amphibians from the Naboo swamps. While most spacefarers would dismiss Gungans as primitives, they have developed an advanced technology.
