Major Derlin was an Alliance field officer assigned to the Rebel base on Hoth at the time of the battle that drove the Rebels from that system. He was the one burdened with the task of breaking terrible news to Princess Leia Organa. When her friends, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, were stranded outside in a Hoth blizzard, Derlin had to inform her that the shield doors to Echo Base must be closed for the night. A stoic Leia complied, putting the safety of the Alliance base over her personal concerns for her friends.
From the Expanded Universe
As a captain, Derlin served under Carlist Rieekan at a Rebel base on Nentan. During the evacuation of Nentan, Derlin oversaw the escape of essential military personnel. In a well-documented, heroic and unorthodox maneuver, Derlin and his men commandeered a vacant Imperial landing barge and stole it from right under the occupational forces' collective noses. For this, Derlin was promoted to Major.
After the Battle of Hoth, Major Bren Derlin led the commando team arranged by Han Solo to destroy the shield generator protecting the second Death Star over Endor. Derlin organized the eleven members of the team, though not the command team for the insertion shuttle.
Behind the Scenes
Major Derlin was played by actor John Ratzenberger, known to many as Cliff Claven from the television series, "Cheers." Expanded Universe material states that Derlin was part of Han Solo's commando team on Endor, though that means he was played by a different actor in
Return of the Jedi.
