    Bib Fortuna

As the former majordomo to the late Jabba the Hutt, the scheming Bib Fortuna seized power after his master's demise and attempted to control the criminal underworld on Tatooine. For decades, those attempting to do business with Jabba the Hutt first needed to maneuver past the Twi'lek, an ever-present attendant who often hovered near Jabba's ear, offering advice and feeding his boss information. Fortuna followed the rules of protocol in the Hutt's court (such as they were), and spoke only in Huttese, though he understood other tongues.

History

Bib Fortuna beside Jabba the Hutt at the Mos Espa pod race

The Twi’lek majordomo Bib Fortuna served Jabba the Hutt for decades, granting visitors audiences with his master – or, sometimes, denying them that access. Fortuna’s position demanded extraordinary patience in dealing with everything from drunken thugs to haughty emissaries, with Jabba’s mercurial moods a particular hazard of the job.

Bib Fortuna beside Jabba the Hutt as he addresses Luke Skywalker

Shortly before the Battle of Endor, Luke Skywalker arrived to bargain for the life of his friend Han Solo, the smuggler turned palace wall decoration. Skywalker used a Jedi mind trick to get past Fortuna and confront Jabba.

  • During the last years of the Republic, the Twi’lek Bib Fortuna served Jabba the Hutt as majordomo, controlling access to the Outer Rim gangster. Fortuna was a fixture by Jabba’s side, whispering intelligence about new arrivals. He had simpler duties as well, such as waking up Jabba from his frequent naps.

  • Serving a galactic crimelord required Fortuna to meet all manner of unsavory, frightening underworld figures: Syndicate bosses, cold-hearted bounty hunters and vicious thugs all found their way to Jabba’s palace on Tatooine. But perhaps no visitor was more intimidating than Darth Vader, who arrived at the palace shortly after the Battle of Yavin.

  • When C-3PO and R2-D2 arrived at Jabba’s palace, Fortuna greeted them coolly, becoming more interested when he learned the droids had a gift for his master. But Fortuna failed to get his hands on the promised present – the droids had been instructed only to give it to Jabba himself.

  • Fortuna reluctantly brought the mechanical duo to his master, where they delivered a message from Luke Skywalker, a self-styled Jedi Knight seeking to strike a deal for the life of his friend Han Solo, now entombed in carbonite. Jabba refused to bargain, though he was happy to accept Skywalker’s gift -- the two droids.

  • Later, the Ubese bounty hunter Boushh arrived with Solo’s co-pilot, Chewbacca the Wookiee, as his apparent prisoner. Boushh’s aggressive negotiating style won Jabba’s respect. He paid the bounty on Chewbacca, then had Fortuna take him to the dungeons.

  • Boushh turned out to be Princess Leia in disguise, but Jabba wasn’t fooled – he allowed the princess to free Solo from the carbonite before revealing himself, Fortuna and the rest of his court. Han was hauled off to prison and Leia was forced to don a slave girl’s skimpy outfit.

  • Jabba told Fortuna not to admit Skywalker when he came for Solo, and the Twi’lek majordomo intercepted him when he arrived. But the Jedi Knight barely broke stride, somehow forcing the Hutt’s Gamorrean guards to give way and telling Fortuna to take him to Jabba now.

  • Fortuna didn’t take orders from outsiders, let alone ones Jabba had refused to see. But something in Skywalker’s voice made it difficult for the Twi’lek to think clearly. He obediently led the Jedi into the throne room where Jabba was waiting.

  • When Skywalker insisted he be allowed to speak, Fortuna repeated this to Jabba, earning himself a shove off the Hutt’s dais. Skywalker had used a Jedi mind trick to compel the hapless majordomo’s assistance.

    Jabba the Hutt

Jabba the Hutt was one of the galaxy’s most powerful gangsters, with far-reaching influence in both politics and the criminal underworld. There were no second chances with Jabba, something Han Solo would find out -- though the slug-like alien would ultimately fall victim to his own hubris and vengeful ways.

    Jabba the Hutt's Palace

A single, winding dirt-swept road curves up into the crook of a rocky canyon, leading to a lone structure in the desert wastes beyond the Dune Sea of Tatooine. Here stood the palace of Jabba the Hutt, an immense curving building of sandblasted metal and pitted stone. Inside, the dregs of the galaxy congregated to do all manner of illicit business, to curry favor with the grotesque crime lord, or to avoid his fickle wrath. Jabba reclined atop a stone dais within the throne room of his palace, a bustling chamber that overlooked a secret pit that contained his favorite beast, the vicious rancor monster.

    Twi'lek

Twi'leks are tall, thin humanoids with skin pigment that spans a rainbow of colors. Their most distinctive feature is a pair of shapely prehensile tentacles that grow from the base of their skulls. Few things are as graceful as a female Twi'lek in motion. This beautiful image has forever doomed generations of young Twi'leks into servitude, as the wealthy and corrupt have taken to brandishing Twi'leks as badges of prestige. In the waning years of the Republic, the Twi'lek homeworld of Ryloth was represented in the Galactic Senate by the corpulent blue-skinned politician Orn Free Taa. Even a politician of high office was not above flaunting a pair of lovely Twi'lek aides as a sign of influence and wealth.

Luke Skywalker was a Tatooine farmboy who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known. A generation later, the location of the famed Jedi master was one of the galaxy’s greatest mysteries. Haunted by Ben Solo’s fall to evil and convinced the Jedi had to end, Luke sought exile on a distant world, ignoring the galaxy’s pleas for help. But his solitude would be interrupted – and Luke Skywalker had one final, momentous role to play in the struggle between good and evil.

    Tatooine

Tatooine is harsh desert world orbiting twin suns in the galaxy’s Outer Rim. In the days of the Empire and the Republic, many settlers scratched out a living on moisture farms, while spaceport cities such as Mos Eisley and Mos Espa served as home base for smugglers, criminals, and other rogues. Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker both once called Tatooine home, although across the stars it was more widely known as a hive of scum and villainy ruled by the crime boss Jabba the Hutt.

    Boonta Eve Classic Podracer Pilots

The Boonta Eve Classic was the largest annual Podrace held on Tatooine, hosted by the Hutts to commemorate the Boonta Eve holiday. Held just outside Mos Espa, the Boonta race course started in the Mos Espa Grand Arena. The formal race ceremony started with a parade of flag-bearers. Once the bearers cleared the grid, the Podracers' massive engines would roar to life, seemingly anxious at the chance to soar at speeds exceeding 700 kilometers-per-hour. Eighteen Podracers competed to win the trophy that day. Anakin Skywalker survived to cross the finish line first, earning not only accolades, but his freedom from slavery.
