    Clone Trooper Armor

The secret army created by the Kaminoans came outfitted with armor, weapons and gear. Each clone trooper wore a set of form-fitting plastoid plates over a black body glove. While not proof against a direct hit from a laser blast, clone armor could withstand impacts, pressure, heat and acrid vapors. Improvements were made throughout the Clone Wars, and armor variants were introduced for specialized missions.

History

Clone troopers on Kamino lining up to receive their armor

Clone armor may have looked claustrophobic, but Kaminoan clones trained with it from an early age, and felt comfortable and secure in its confines. When Yoda arrived on Kamino to take charge of the army, the Republic immediately possessed the finest military force in the galaxy.

Colors were initially used to identify clone trooper officers by rank, but the Jedi encouraged their clones to show individuality, and special unit markings and color patterns quickly spread through the Grand Army of the Republic. Clone commanders also frequently customized their armor.

Improvements to clone armor and equipment were made throughout the Clone Wars; by its final battles, nearly all clones had switched to improved “Phase II” armor. By then, variant forms of armor were also in use for troopers in specialized roles, from pilots to bomb-disposal teams.

  • Special ops clones were trained to move quickly and quietly and detect enemies at a distance, and wore advanced gear that improved their senses. These stealthy clones served with distinction in battles on Geonosis and in the Christophsis system.

  • Clone pilots saw themselves as a breed apart, selected early in their development and taught special skills. Their helmets had improved sensors and their armor featured additional life-support gear.

  • Like clone troopers, clone pilots received improvements to their gear as the Clone Wars ground on. The clone pilot Warthog wore an updated rig – customized to his liking -- during a mission to Aleen.

  • Pilots who flew experimental craft for the Republic, such as the stealth ship used by Anakin Skywalker at Christophsis, had their own unique armor.

  • By the final days of the war, clone pilots had new gear, with open-faced helmets that offered superior visibility during space battles.

  • Some battles of the Clone Wars were fought underwater, necessitating the use of SCUBA gear that was lighter than regular armor and featured fins, life-support gear, and propulsion packs.

  • The Republic’s independent-minded, highly trained ARC troopers were often the first to get new armor, with their field reports helping researchers improve gear before it was distributed more widely.

  • Republic commandos were among the most-respected units in the clone army, pursuing missions that no other soldiers could tackle. Commandos had their own specialized armor and gear, the sight of which inspired whispering and pointing among other clone troopers.

  • Clone scout troopers wore lightweight armor and were trained for recon work. Similar armor was worn a generation later by the Empire’s scout troopers.

  • BARC troopers wore helmets designed to focus attention forward, avoiding distractions that could be deadly at high speed.

  • Galactic marines were notable for the filtered visor they wore to keep out pollutants and other hazards. These forces saw action on Mygeeto at the end of the Clone Wars, where they eliminated the Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi.

  • Clone paratroopers were specially trained for airborne assaults, and wore unique “beehive” helmets and kamas. Paratroopers descending from gunships were on the front lines of the fighting on Utapau.

  • The Empire mothballed or recycled vast stocks of clone armor, replacing it with stormtrooper gear. But clone armor remained an occasional sight in the galaxy, as bounty hunters, pirates and others made use of scavenged armor plates. Such armor was also worn by a handful of renegade clones who’d survived the war and now sought to make their way in the universe.

    Clone Troopers

At the time of their introduction, the Republic clone troopers represented the future of galactic warfare. Far superior to battle droids, the clone troopers formed the backbone of the Republic's new military that waged war against the forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. So symbolic were they of the times, the galaxy-wide conflict that saw their debut took its name from their ranks: the Clone Wars.

    Galactic Republic

For over a thousand years, the Galactic Republic stood firm as a democratic union that governed the galaxy. The Republic was governed by the Galactic Senate, consisting of elected officials from each system and world, and Jedi Knights served as peacekeepers. With the rise of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, however, the Galactic Republic -- and democracy -- would crumble.

    Kamino

Once purged from the otherwise complete Jedi Archives was all evidence of the mysterious world of Kamino. A lonely world beyond the Outer Rim and just south of the Rishi Maze, few could have predicted that Kamino would become a key contributor to a massive shift in political power in the final days of the Republic. Kamino is a planet of endless oceans and storms. Few features mark its surface, save for massive stilt-mounted cities wherein reside the planet's natural inhabitants, the Kaminoans. From Tipoca City, the planet's prime minister rules. Lama Su and Kamino’s chief medical scientist Nala Se closely monitor the operations of Kamino's most prized export -- clones -- even after the Clone Wars reaches a conclusion.

    Clone Captain Rex

Rex once served the Republic on the frontlines during the Clone Wars, taking orders from Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano as first a captain and later a commander. He viewed military service as an honor, and his loyalty to the Republic and his Jedi Generals was absolute. But when Order 66 was executed, it was Ahsoka who helped to free Rex from the programming of his inhibitor chip. At the dawn of the Empire, Rex has escaped with his life but is considered killed-in-action in the eyes of the new regime. That allows him to operate in the shadows and help any clone brothers who remain separate from the Imperial ranks.

    Clone Pilot Warthog

A veteran clone pilot of many starfighter engagements, Warthog was highly skilled in combat operations. He was comfortable behind the stick of a V-19 Torrent Interceptor, a Z-95 Headhunter, or a Republic attack gunship. He piloted in the thick of combat alongside commanding officer, General Plo Koon.

    Stormtroopers

Stormtroopers are elite shock troops fanatically loyal to the Empire and impossible to sway from the Imperial cause. They wear imposing white armor, which offers a wide range of survival equipment and temperature controls to allow the soldiers to survive in almost any environment. Stormtroopers wield blaster rifles and pistols with great skill, and attack in hordes to overwhelm their enemies. Along with standard stormtroopers, the Empire has organized several specialized units, including snowtroopers and scout troopers.
