THE DARK TIMES
Named after its owner, Old Jho's was not particularly Empire-friendly, ignoring an Imperial mandate that the HoloNet News be played at all times. Eventually, the Empire discovered that Old Jho himself was actively aiding rebels. They arrested and executed him, turning stewardship of the watering hole over to Valen Rudor, and Imperial pilot.
After the Empire discovered that Old Jho -- owner of the popular Old Jho's Pit Stop cantina -- was aiding rebels, they arrested and executed him. The Empire assumed ownership of the watering hole, placing it under the stewardship of Valen Rudor. There, Rudor once again encountered the rebels. He led a hunt for Ezra Bridger and his friends through the city's underground tunnels, but was unable to apprehend them.
HoloNet News was the official state-sanctioned news agency of the Empire, with anchor Alton Kastle delivering broadcasts on key issues and occurrences of the day. Briefs were sent via hyperspace transmission that allowed instantaneous connection throughout the galaxy. The HoloNet News was taken over by the Republic during the Clone Wars to ensure that information was not compromised by enemy forces, and became the mouthpiece of the Empire. The Ministry of Information's Pollux Hax oversaw the agency, ensuring that stories were consistent with government messaging.
Not every Jedi perished in Order 66. Kanan Jarrus survived the Emperor’s purge, going underground for years and hiding the truth about who he really was. To keep his past a secret, Kanan carried a blaster -- an uncommon practice for a Jedi -- and used a lightsaber that had to be assembled. He was a leader among the Ghost crew, a small group of rebels looking to strike back against the Empire, and with the emergence of the Force-sensitive Ezra, once again embraced his identity as a Jedi Knight.
Growing up on his own during the age of the Empire, Ezra Bridger relied on his street smarts -- and subconscious Force abilities -- to survive. He became a con artist and small-time thief, doing what he needed to get by on his home planet Lothal. But this reality also hardened Ezra, who by the time he was 14 years old, had little trust for anyone. That would change with his introduction to the Ghost crew, a small band of rebels fighting back against the Empire. Ezra came to believe in their cause, and saw that he could help change the galaxy for the better. And with the help of Kanan Jarrus, he began to learn the ways of the Jedi.
