Using the highly advanced technology native to its planet of development, the Umbaran starfighter is the most intuitively-designed ship in the galaxy. Its shielded cockpit surrounded the pilot with touch-sensitive holographic displays that react instantly to touch. The ship's unique construction allows its airframe to flex and bend, not only adding to its maneuverability, but allowing it to land and take off with a minimal of mechanical effort. It boasts the energetic plasma weapons found on many Umbaran craft, as well as modular missile pods.
During the Republic campaign to secure Umbara, the natives of the shadowy world unleashed all manner of previously unseen advanced technology against the clone trooper forces. The Umbaran MHC -- mobile heavy cannon -- is a titanic juggernaut built atop six powerful, ground-shaking legs. The dome-shaped body of the spider-like tank is heavily armored, able to withstand anti-armor infantry rockets. Mounted atop the dome on an articulated arm is a powerful electromagnetic plasma cannon. The monstrous MHC has almost no weaknesses.
The Shadow People of Umbara have excelled in the science of technology despite their isolation from the rest of the galaxy. In their pocket of territory within the Ghost Nebula, they have engineered potent examples of energy weaponry and anti-gravity systems with performance that exceeds galactic standards. One impressive example is the Umbaran hover tank. The single-pilot vehicle is built around an armored control pod bracketed by twin conducting vanes that each house an electromagnetic plasma cannon that can decimate entire platoons of enemy troops with a single blast. When the tank is powered down, in docked configuration, the conducting vanes rotate and split open to serve as landing struts.
The pale and ghostly Umbarans are an extremely high tech species who have decided that the Separatists are a more worthy group to follow than the Republic. At one time represented in the Galactic Republic by the devious Mee Deechi, Umbara seceded from the Republic and joined the Separatist cause. Their advanced weaponry proved a great challenge to the clone troopers tasked with conquering Umbara.
Umbara, known as the "Shadow World" due to the rays of its sun never completely reaching its surface, is perpetually dark. The native wildlife have adapted to survive in such gloom, making the planet perpetually dangerous. Umbara was once part of the Galactic Republic, represented in the Senate by Senator Mee Deechi. Later in the Clone Wars, the planet's loyalty wavered and the natives of Umbara allied themselves with the Separatists, bringing their extremely advanced technology to the Separatist Alliance.
In the final days of the Republic, the galactic government had grown so huge and corrupt that any attempt at change required radical thinking and extreme actions. Outlying systems that saw no benefit from being part of the Republic despite paying heavy taxes, began to rebel. This undercurrent of disgust towards Coruscant was seized by a charismatic leader, Count Dooku. The former Jedi rallied together these worlds in a Separatist movement that saw the departure of thousands of systems from the Republic. When Dooku's alliance was secretly backed by corporate titans that offered their unlimited droid armies to the cause, the Separatists emerged as a major threat to the Republic, and the galaxy tipped towards full scale war.
