Cold Ride, Cold Technology

This is a big week for Star Wars fans. Of course, the highly anticipated release of Star Wars Trilogy on DVD for the first time will have you watching the digitally restored and remastered films in a whole new way.

[ Shooting Ewoks, and other Star Wars Fantasies ] The original trilogy is also making its debut on two other platforms this week -- the Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation 2 videogame consoles, thanks to LucasArts' Star Wars: Battlefront. In Battlefront, also available for the PC, you can live the battles of the classic films and beyond.

Reviews in the gaming press have included praise for the Battlefront's complexity and enjoyable multiplayer features, diverse game strategies and realistic war simulation.

However, for Star Wars fans, the chance to live the battles and win the war for the Empire, Rebellion, Separatists or Republic may be secondary next to the chance to live out some Star Wars fantasies. Since one can play virtually any classic battle, from any side, with a variety of troop types, satisfying experiences abound for any fan.

starwars.com would like to present just six of the many opportunities you will have in Star Wars: Battlefront to utter the phrase, "I've always wanted to do that."

[ Shooting Ewoks, and other Star Wars Fantasies ] #6. Ride a Tauntaun
In 1980, with expectations high for the very first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back opened with the Star Destroyer underbelly, but followed the Imperial probes down to the surface of Hoth. The overhead shot of the solitary bounding tauntaun over the bleak plains, accompanied with its alien gurgling cries, let the audience know this wasn't just a sequel... it was an all-new ride.

In Star Wars: Battlefront, the Hoth battlefield has some of these stalwart snow lizards ready to be mounted and ridden onto the snowy plains. The ride alone lets you pretend you're Luke Skywalker or Han Solo. But unlike the isolated death-rides depicted in the film, you can optimistically size up the beasts against the power of AT-STs and AT-ATs.

You can almost smell their oily hides. But in the heat of battle, there's no chance to cut one open for shelter.

[ Shooting Ewoks, and other Star Wars Fantasies ] #5. Be a Droideka
As the tauntaun made the first statement in Empire, so too did the mysterious discs of metal wheeling down the hallway and unfolding into shielded cannons in 1999's The Phantom Menace tell the audience that the visual bar had been raised.

Any droid capable of earning a draw against legendary Jedi is worth paying attention to, and playing as.

If you've had enough of the Republic and want your best chance to do some damage to some clones, nothing beats the shielding and firepower of a destroyer droid in Star Wars: Battlefront.

[ Shooting Ewoks, and other Star Wars Fantasies ] #4. Ride a Speeder Bike
Luke and Leia's 500 kilometer-an-hour speeder bike chase through the forest moon of Endor is one of the most exhilarating sequences in the entire Star Wars saga. As a number of dead scout troopers can attest, one had better be an offspring of Anakin Skywalker before attempting the feat. The slightest twitch means a fiery wreck.

In Battlefront, both Imperial and Rebel Endor combatants can hop aboard a speeder bike for rapid transport from point A to point B, or to simply tear away into the scenery. Your speeder exploits won't be a linear race to the finish, as depicted in some previous Star Wars games. Rather, the speeder bike is your tool and a true free-form vessel you can take anywhere your war strategy needs it to go.
