And our hosts are on stage!
Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm Story Group takes a seat! He says that now that he’s not hosting the BTS Stage, he wanted to program a panel he’d really like to see. He and Tom Spina (of Spina Designs) have a lot of cantina knowledge they want to share.
And here’s Tom Spina!
Last year, they showed lots of rare imagery…including how you light a certain alien’s eyes…
And…
The cantina was shot in London (with human beings)…
…and had pick-up shots in the US.
Here’s John Berg working on Hammerhead.
A lot of the cantina creatures were put together quickly.
Here’s a sketch and finished alien…eating C-3POs!
A lot of the names were “Devil Guy,” “Skull Guy,” etc. For this alien, Rick Baker did the sketch.
This Bith were supposed to have mouths…on their necks!
Most of the cantina masks survive today. This original mask was repainted for…the Holiday Special.
Hidalgo explains that the EU often built off of character faces — but when you see the real prop, the rest of the body doesn’t always match.
Stuart Freeborn sent a photo of masks to Lucasfilm in prep for Return of the Jedi.
That’s Brain Guy — never before seen photo! He had no name for a long time — Hidalgo pitched Pons Limbic.
Here are two masks restored by Tom Spina.
The alternate Duros!
Greedo in white pumps…
Lots of mixing and matching of costumes. Jawa robes were often shared.
Rick Baker working on creatures.
Baker made many variations of masks, using one mold with intentional differences to make them unique.
But it’s not all aliens in the cantina! There are more humans than aliens in the UK shoot.
A lot of them came from “The Ugly Agency” – a casting agency for odd looking people.
Members of Jabba’s posse are also in the cantina!
One mystery they cannot solve: The Guy Who Hides Behind Stuff.
And yes, there is a second smoker in the cantina.
Bobby Ramsey promised to shave his moustache for the shoot…and didn’t.
Anthony Lang was in both the cantina and was a friend of the Emperor in ROTJ!
Here’s what may be the first Star Wars selfie.
Taking a break for a raffle giveaway…
“Little Aunt Beru” no more — a fan has officially named this guy!
There are more mysteries to solve. What’s this thing?
Why is there a crocodile on the wall?
They WILL be answered another day!
And that’s it! Thanks for joining us!
P.S. “Little Aunt Beru”‘s official new name is…Damono Deomaley!
We’re here at the Behind-the-Scenes Stage, getting ready to begin!
