What do you do when you have more thoughts about Star Wars Rebels than you know what to do with? Make a list of your favorite moments — in no particular order, because that might fry your circuits. Welcome to Ranking Rebels.
A fueling run turns into a life-and-death smuggling job in“Secret Cargo,” as Hera, Zeb, and Ezra must escort Senator Mon Mothma to a secure position. (Genevieve O’Reilly reprises her role as Mon!) Here are my 10 favorite moments from the episode.
Don’tcha just hate it when you’re watching the holonet and some nosy infiltrator droid shows up right in the middle of your favorite program? Zeb, Hera, and Ezra get to see Mon Mothma’s speech, but there’s not a lot of time to celebrate because they have to avoid being blown out of the sky. They manage to destroy the droid, but it’s likely the Empire knows they’re there.
We knew the Y-wings liberated earlier this season were meant for General Dodonna’s unit, and here they are. Both Erskin Semaj and Captain Jon “Dutch” Vander, a.k.a. Gold Leader, are all about secrecy, while Gold Two is reading everyone the riot act because Phoenix Squadron doesn’t play by the rules. Hera’s not going to apologize for that and neither are her crew.
3. Here they come.
With the arrival of Imperial ships, it’s all hands on deck. Ezra gets to fly a Y-wing (how cool is that?) and Gold Squadron is off to protect the transport while Hera and Chopper work to get the Ghost detached. Hera’s face when Mon Mothma boards is a study in hero worship, but no matter how much awe Mothma may inspire, Hera’s quick to put her to work to get the Ghost free and ready to jump.
4. Ezra loves ion cannons.
Gold Leader disables the Imperial ship and everyone makes the jump to lightspeed, which gives Hera and the rest of the crew time to process. The Ghost has new cargo. P.S. Dantooine!
5. Know your enemy.
Hera thinks she has a way to get Mon Mothma safely to Dantooine, but Thrawn knows Hera well enough to anticipate her next move. He really knows them all much better than they think possible, which is both terrifying and fascinating. Always one step ahead, Thrawn has his new TIE prototype and his best pilot, Vult Skerris, ready to go. Into the nebula, flyboys!
6. There’s always time for caf.
The Empire may be on their tail, but it was so great to get a little coffee klatch time with Hera and Mon. Both fighters. Both leading others in a fight against impossible odds. It’s nice to know they have each other to talk to and it’s interesting to see Mothma in a new light.
7. Talk about a detour.
Hera wasn’t messing around. The Archeon Pass goes right through a nebula that’s birthing stars left and right. However, Commander Vult Skerris isn’t one to be dissuaded by either heat or a flying challenge. Luckily, Hera’s plan takes out two of the three TIEs, but Gold Squadron’s down two ships, as well. Plus, the Ghost is disabled. It’s not over yet.
8. A two-pronged approach.
The ship count may be 3-on-3, but when one side has two Star Destroyers and a TIE defender prototype on the other, it’s going to take more than firepower to get everyone out alive. Mothma trusts Hera will think of something as she stalls the Empire and Ezra literally puts himself in the line of fire to get Vander a shot at Skerris.
9. What happens when you shoot proton torpedoes into a nebula? A realllly big explosion.
The torpedoes vs. nebula gas solution was set up early in the episode and watching it pay off was glorious. There’s Pryce feeling all smug at having caught the Ghost and, next thing you know, a couple of explosions take two Star Destroyers out of commission. You can never underestimate the value of well-placed proton torpedoes.
10. The Rebel Alliance.
Mothma’s speech is both a declaration of her decision to fight against the Empire and a call to others to join the fight. From Lothal to Atollon, the message goes out and many answer the call. No longer a few rebel cells scattered throughout the galaxy, the Rebel Alliance is born.
