Marooned and facing impossible odds, Sabine and Hera prove just how awesome they both are and find their way “Out Of Darkness.” This is the fifth episode of Season One, and it’s an action-packed, tense ride.
Here are my 10 favorite moments from the episode!
1. “There’s not a pilot in the Imperial Fleet that can outrun me.”
Hera’s confidence as a pilot will always make me happy, even when things don’t go quite according to plan. How many pilots do you know who can handle 3 TIEs while flying a shuttle and dealing with two passengers asking questions? That’s some good company to be in.
2. Meeting Fulcrum.
We’ve heard about Fulcrum, but this is the first time we meet Fulcrum in person, or should I say, in audio? Sabine’s need to know more is a bit of a cramp in the plan, but her questions answer our questions about where Hera’s getting her intel from. It’s also interesting to watch this knowing who Fulcrum is.
3. It’s a matter of trust.
Sabine may be in her mid-teens, but she’s already been through enough to feel reluctant about blindly trusting people, even Hera and Kanan. While she obviously trusts Hera, she’s more concerned about whether or not she can trust anyone beyond this small crew — her time at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore taught her to be leery of larger organizations and their motives.
4. Monsters and shadows of the Clone Wars.
Anaxes may have been destroyed after the Clone Wars, but Fort Anaxes survived and brings a little history into this episode. While Fort Anaxes is used as a covert location and fuel depot, it’s also home to some pretty nasty creatures: fyrnocks.
5. Space waffles and shenanigans.
No matter how serious the situation might be, there’s always time for a little tomfoolery. Zeb with Space Waffle Face will always make me laugh and the image of Kanan meditating and hearing Ezra and Zeb through the door, with the inevitable “How did you know?” is just the sort of lightness you need after a tense situation.
6. Blast from the past.
Sabine’s never met an explosive she didn’t like, but her description of rhydonium as “one of my oldest and most explosive friends” says it all. When Sabine masterminds an explosive trap, you just know it’s going to get good.
7. We’re all gonna die.
It’s not a moment as much as an entire scene because the fight between Hera, Sabine, and the fyrnocks is poetry in motion. As our heroes take out wave after wave, the banter between them never stops. Hera’s “Light it up” is a cheer-worthy moment, and the image of Sabine and Hera blasting fyrnocks back to back on top of the Phantom is one of my favorite moments of the series.
8. Time for some thrilling heroics!
Just about the time things are looking dire, here comes the cavalry complete with that iconic Star Wars theme. Of course, these ladies don’t need saving, just a little back up. If anyone needs saving, it’s poor Ezra who almost ends up as dinner trying to show off for Sabine and being rescued by her in the process.
9. Old tricks.
In Season Two’s “The Mystery of Chopper Base,” Hera reroutes auxiliary power to the hull to zap off the attacking spiders, but this is where we first saw that trick. Just like Kanan, we didn’t know it could do that and, like Hera says, there’s a lot we don’t know about her ship — but there’s something really neat about seeing this trick used this early and then popping back up to save the day later.
10. “I just trusted you with my life.”
While Sabine’s concerns may not be fully dealt with, after this mission, she’s willing to trust Hera and, by extension, Fulcrum. Hera put her life in Sabine’s hands. Sabine may not be able to know everything, but she’s now willing to accept Hera’s word that this is part of something bigger and more important — and that she can trust in that.
