What do you do when you have more thoughts about Star Wars Rebels than you know what to do with? Make a list of your favorite moments — in no particular order, because that might fry your circuits. Welcome to Ranking Rebels.
In the Star Wars Rebels Season One finale “Fire Across the Galaxy,” our rebels need to save Kanan, face the Inquisitor, and strike a blow at the Empire. No big deal.
Here are my 10 favorite moments from the episode!
1. “The Artist” is back.
How can you not love this scene? Watching Zeb and Ezra steal a shuttle as Sabine offers the best distraction ever is only made better by her cheerful, “Bye bye, bucketheads!” before everything goes KABOOM. Extra points for the trooper’s “Not again.”
2. The word that haunts Kanan: run.
The Inquisitor’s skills at mental manipulation become even more clear as he takes Kanan back to one of his most terrible memories.
3. Sabine’s TIE project.
According to the episode trivia gallery, the paint job on Sabine’s TIE has icons from her helmet, Ezra’s jacket, Zeb’s armor, Hera’s lekku, Kanan’s arm-guard, and even Chopper’s face. That makes it even cooler than I first thought. Also, I love the “That’s not regulation,” “I kinda like it,” trooper exchange. Kablam!
4. Ezra to the rescue.
Ezra’s faith in Kanan has gotten them this far and guides him as he hops up into the air ducts (again with the air ducts!) and goes off to save Kanan. While Kanan wants to scold his Padawan, he needs his help. The bond between these two will always make my top moments.
5. Sabine, Hera, and Zeb taking the fight to the Empire.
Ezra may be helping Kanan, but there’s still the matter of everyone getting off Tarkin’s Star Destroyer safely. That means Hera, Zeb, and Sabine have to clear a path to the shuttle bay in the face of an increased amount of stormtroopers. Watching these three clear a path and take out troopers along the way is poetry in motion.
6. “Let me borrow that.”
Time for the Kanan and Inquisitor showdown. Kanan borrows Ezra’s lightsaber and shows both Ezra and the Inquisitor a brand new way to use it as he fights his nemesis. Ezra Force pulls Kanan’s saber off the Inquisitor and now we’re two on one. The fight amps up and things look good until Ezra falls…
7. Hera: Do you have Kanan? Is he okay? Ezra: Yeah. I think he’s better than okay.
Once Ezra falls, Kanan finds he has nothing left to fear and a truly epic battle ensues! Kanan’s fighting like we’ve never seen him fight. He wins the battle, but it’s the Inquisitor who chooses his own fate as he intones, “You have no idea what you’ve unleashed here today. There are things far more frightening than death,” and lets go.
8. The escape and reunion.
I’d forgotten that Hera and Kanan fly TIE fighters side by side in this episode and it’s so, so cool. But they’re not out of danger until Chopper shows up with the rebel fleet! Hera and Kanan’s reunion is especially sweet, but it’s so great to see everyone together again.
9. “We’re a cell?”
The rest of the Ghost crew learn what Hera’s known all season and we meet Bail Organa again, this time as a rebel leader. We also learn that there are more rebel cells and we meet Fulcrum, a.k.a. Ahsoka Tano. So many feelings happening all at once watching this.
Tarkin may have lost this battle, but he has no intention of losing the war. To that end, the Emperor has sent Darth Vader to deal with Lothal and our rebels. As we fade out on his breathing, we can only wonder what comes next.
Those were my moments for this week’s episode and that concludes Season One! Tell us what your favorite moments were in the comments and may the Force be with you!
