At the core of Star Wars are characters who continue to push on and fight despite the extreme obstacles in their way. Luke Skywalker overcame tragedy and I-am-your-father shocks to become a great Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to pull himself up, both physically and metaphorically, to cut down Darth Maul. Darth Vader dared to save his son. Coinciding with these never-give-up moments are classic lines of inspiration — many of which, we realized, are perfect for the gym! Here are 15 Star Wars quotes to keep in mind the next time you’re trying to get in that extra rep or run that extra mile.
1. “Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.” — Yoda
Taking that initial step to living a healthier life can be intimidating, and the first few times at the gym can be difficult. Set your anxiety straight with a line from Master Yoda.
2. “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?” — Yoda
Remember this quote when you feel — or are made to feel — like there’s something you can’t do.
3. “That’s not how the Force works!” — Han Solo
It’s good to have a plan at the gym. Get to know what equipment is available and take time to learn how to do exercises properly. It’s not a great idea to make it up as you go along or guess, and this line is a reminder of that.
4. “Shut him up or shut him down.” — Han Solo
Use when talking about that one dude in the gym who is waaaaay too loud while lifting.
5. “Never tell me the odds.” — Han Solo
Getting fit can seem like an insurmountable task at times, but it’s not. Look anyone who tells you that it’s not possible straight in the eyes and quote everyone’s favorite smuggler.
6. “I’ll not leave you here, I’ve got to save you!” — Luke Skywalker
Everyone needs a spotter, and it’s nothing to be ashamed about. Safety is the most important thing in the gym, so if you try to help spot a buddy, they should be grateful. If they say, “I don’t need any help. I’ve got this,” use this quote from Return of the Jedi.
7. “These are your first steps…” — Obi-Wan Kenobi
Everyone takes their first steps, even Luke and Rey. Use when you are psyching yourself up for a long run on the treadmill or trying new exercises for the first time.
8. “Stop taking my hand!” — Rey
Sometimes, someone who is new to the gym might be intimidated by all of the equipment. To be fair, it is a lot to take in, so offer to help…but be sure about how much help they really need!
9. “I can show you the ways of the Force.” — Kylo Ren
If someone you know needs some guidance at the gym, this phrase can come in handy. Just say it in a nicer way than Kylo.
10. “This is so wizard!” — Kitster
The perfect thing to say after nailing a new exercise or hitting your target weight. Kitser was wise, folks!
11. “Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them.” — Obi-Wan Kenobi
If you’re with a gym buddy who is nervous about trying a new machine, drop some wisdom from Obi-Wan. A lot of equipment in the gym doesn’t make sense initially, but it’s important to keep an open mind, try it safely, and be willing to tackle new challenges head on.
12. “Unlimited power!” — Darth Sidious
Use after breaking your personal record for the bench press! Pretending that you’re shooting Force lighting at the same time: optional.
13. “Your focus determines your reality.” — Qui-Gon Jinn
Say when pushing through those final reps. Focus on what you’re doing and nothing else. (It’ll also help you drown out that aforementioned guy who is waaaaay too loud.)
14. “Do what must be done. Do not hesitate. Show no mercy.” — Darth Sidious
Crush your fitness goals with the wrath of a Sith Lord! Now hurry on over and do some reps.
15. “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” — Yoda
Say this to pump yourself up before going for a big run, adding more weight to the bar, or just getting healthier in the first place. It’s okay to fail — but this quote is about commitment, and that’s where to start.
